830 Altimeter

As is well known, going back four years on the forums, water or sweat will disable the altimeter on the 530/830 Edge. Garmin is well aware of this, and as far as I know , continues to sell units with this defect. The first time it failed on me, they replaced it free of charge. However, the replacement had the same defect, failed, and now they want $140 to send me another defective unit. If these are advertised as water proof, would this be a FTC violation?

  • Hard to say; it is a design flaw, obviously, but if, after drying, the unit is unharmed, then it can be claimed as waterproof. The fact that in the manual nothing is mentioned that altitude readings are wrong when wet is not enough I guess.

Garmin's attitude of not admitting that it is a design error en sending identical replacements (free or paid) is a very bad attitude. I wonder if and how they manage it with the 40-series.

    • I took off the flap, pointed the hair dryer at it for twenty minutes, no luck. Did a total reboot; nada. Two months later, it will still tell me that massive hill I climbed was -13% grade.  I feel sorry for all those riders over in the British isles, probably failed their first week. My previous Edge Touring Plus never had an issue. When the USB went on that, I found they discontinued the Plus. Bought the regular, and found it had no altimeter. Went and bought the 830, just to get the altimeter. So, I’m out double.
