Where did heat acclimation go

It has gotten hot around here but it seems that heat acclimation is no longer being provided.

  • I wasn't getting weather on the weather widget. I enabled Garmin Connect location in the background on my Android Phone, cleared cashe and forced closed Garmin Connect. Reopened it and weather came back as well as heat acclimation.

  • I did a chat with Garmin Support yesterday (US).  He asked for permission to view my data (granted) and said my internal temperate sensor was working (I did not know that even tied into things).  He thinks the issue is a paring issue and suggested deterring my device from my phone and pairing them again.  I have REALLY low confidence that will do anything but I am trying it.  Based on the forecast though it might be a bit before it gets tested

  • said my internal temperate sensor was working

Internal Temperature sensor has nothing to do with the weather data of the nearest weather station. Jesus! That guy may not check Garmin’s support articles before answering.

    Three sources

    1.

“When training in heat above 22ºC (72ºF) as determined by the Garmin Connect application,”,

so the condition is defined not by the device.

    2.

“Heat and altitude acclimation insights are provided based on activities performed above 800 meters (2,625’) and for temperatures above 22 C (72 F). This environmental information comes from a combination of GPS and weather reports from your paired compatible smartphone.“,

and the condition is defined using weather reports data.

    3.

For heat acclimatization it uses the weather data provided via Garmin Connect Mobile and not the temperature data from the Edge. This is because the calculation also uses humidity.

Unpairing and re-pairing is a slightly better option, but if a phone (GCM) based sync goes without any exclamation mark, all the notifications arrives at Edge etc. what is the chance of an imperfect pairing resulting in faulty Heat Accl. Calculation? And how can this imperfect pairing happen if Garmin internal weather data is everywhere?

Anyway thanks for sharing that input, too.

  • I did not think it mattered and wasn't going to push the issue over chat (which I hate).  I knew the data was getting to GC so as long as he was happy with data I was not going to argue.  Since EVERY other function that requires pairing works I find it hard to believe that will matter but a simple thing to check

  • Instead of a senseless unpair and repair, I have a suggestion for you.

Enable, or if it is already enabled (which I suppose so), then disable and re-enable the weather toggle under gcm/device/general/2nd item from the top. I have gcm ios, but if you have android it should be the same.

  • I've already done the unpair.  When I verify that does not work yours is a good next step

  • I did a ride last night, 80*F according to weather widget, mid 70s in the woods (mtb ride), very humid.  Heat acclimation worked as expected on my 530 and gave a meaningful value at the end of the ride.

One thing I always do, I observe the 530 syncing to GC on my phone before starting the ride.  I also start the 530 early enough that the weather widget has weather data before I start, so perhaps this is part of my success?  Not sure, just offering up ideas.

  • that the weather widget has weather data before I start,

That is the point. I figured it out, too.

When first I struggled with it I could not see the weather data on the main display. I thought I had removed the weather widget in order to simplify my device along with Trailforks etc.

But later I read that one could not remove this widget.

It gave me idea to check all the settings in GC, both the device-independent, and the device/related ones.

I realized that although there was no weather-like option as Feniix 6X-related one, there was one as Edge 530-related. I dont know why Garmin designed it differently. Anyway it was switched off, so I enabled it.

And it gave me back the weather data on the main screen.

Since then I have not bicycled, but I am more than optimistic that was the reason.

And again I dont understand why it is allowed to disable weather data if a feature of Edge is built-on it.

I do understand why Weather alert can be disabled and enabled, but dont understand why one can restrict the use of Weather  data for Edge.

Or even if it is allowed then why not GC calculates Heat Accl after an upload.

EDIT: I dont know whether after a pairing the default state of Weather is enabled or disabled, but if the first then it is a solution, too, though a bit of overkill.

  • I don’t think unpairing worked. My ride started at 70° but most of it was over 72°. I tried the weather toggle and rode today. Badda bing badda boom, all is working

  • Something I mentioned was starting the Edge early enough before the ride to get the weather data.  I'm not sure if this is a factor, or not, but as a side note:  Although you may have weather enabled, it often doesn't show on the widget immediately, it only refreshes every so many minutes.  So, don't despair if the weather widget doesn't appear right away.  Sync with your phone then wait 5 minutes and look at the status page again.

I'm not sure if starting the ride before the widget has received data has an effect.  I play it safe and start my Edge while I'm still getting kitted up so it always has data in the weather widget before I start recording.
