Edge 830 and Epix Gen 2 HR

So strange....

I have an Edge 830 fully updated with Beta software, running with UT800 headlight and RTC Radar taillight, all hooked up and all Garmin toys working well with one another and am able to control both via the Garmin widget....so I needed an HR data field and used my Epix Gen 2 to broadcast HR....added new sensor/HR to Edge and it worked well in a Garmin graphical HR data field....all hunky dory like!

So NOW, all of a sardine.....as soon as I fire up the HR broadcast from the Epix, it breaks the Light network and I loose control of the UT800 headlight.....I have tried removing all sensors from the Edge, added starting with UT800 light, then RTC Radar then all the others...(oh there's lots of forums and complaints about bad light network forming and getting them to all play nice!!!) but still not working well. I even removed the HR sensor of the Epix from the Edge so the Edge is not even looking for it but as soon as I broadcast HR from the watch, headlight gets disconnected, taillight still works but it gets renamed to Headlight Camera in list of light sensors??!!!

I even have a spare Edge with same apps etc etc but one that has not been updated in the last month or so and it was working previously with both lights and watch broadcasting, THAT failed and dropped headlight!!

It looking more like the watch broadcasting is an issue that interfers with the light network of the Edge..

Any suggestions?

  • This may be a reach, but do you also have the Epix as a light controller?  The varias don't like to be controlled from two different devices.

  • Oh wow...you just solved this for me.....I did install that damn widget from Connect....but I was not using it because it was not working After reading your comment, the UT 800 was in sleep mode and the Edge OFF,  I started the broadcasting HR on the Epix and the UT800 came to life!!!! I suddenly realised the watch still had that app installed so I searched and it was lurking in Activity profiles, I promptly deleted it, then went to Sensors and found it there as well, deleted it completely and now back to normal..Epix beams HR and light network remains on for both!!

THANK YOU!!! I'll run it for a full day tomorrow and see if it holds but its looking good!!! Thanks again!!!

  • I had this happen with my f7.  Took me a while to figure out why my light network wasn't behaving the way I told it to.

I do keep the RTL radar enabled in the f7 sensor list to get vibrations on my wrist when a car is approaching.  I can't hear the beeps coming from the Edge (I'm too old).  I just make sure that the Lights are turned off in the Sensor Menu to avoid the light control issue.

  • That's exactly why I loaded that App! I wanted a vibration on the watch to warn of cars, I see it on the egde of the Edge but sometimes its real noisy (but I'm also old!!) so I thought it would be cool to feel a vibration from the watch! But I want all my lights more that the vibration so its outtathere..dammit I been battling for days! Thanks again!!!

  • OK wait...So I have ditched the app but it would be great if it did work, are you saying you have the app on your F7 but have lights off in Sensor Menu of the RadarLight app and you can still control the lights normally on the Edge?

  • I just use the built-in capability of the f7(Epix) to connect to varia lights and radar.  No extra app needed.

Go into the Sensors & Accessories Menu/Add New/Radar.  Add the RTL when the watch finds it.  The watch will also add the RTL's light at the same time.  So you want to find "Lights" in the Sensor List and set the Status to Off.  If you've already connected the sensors to you watch just turn off the Lights and turn on the Radar.

Next, go to your Edge and make sure your light control settings are what you want/expect.

On your next ride, bring up the Edge and let it control the lights AND start some sort of Bike activity on your Epix.  The Epix should pick up the RTL radar and give you a radar icon in the upper right of the screen like the screenshot below.

Now each time a car approaches, you'll get a buzz and a graphic on the screen.  Discard the activity when finished if you like

  • OK will give it a go, ATM Edge is set to start activity (Road) at 10kph and lights set to High Vis and also start when activity starts..will let you know

  • OK so it all works well as you describe, the key is to start an activity on the Epix...only issue is I cannot find how to vibrate the Epix when a car is detected by the radar, it bleeps but no vibration!...??

  • I don't remember doing anything special to get vibe.  Make sure vibration is On under the System/Sound and Vibe settings.

  • OK that was off...I recall switching it off as it can get irritating...so trip home is going to be interesting..I ride on a bike path next to a highway...in same direction as the traffic...radar is usually lit up the whole way!

Cheers for your help, I actually had the old chest strap on standby!
