Garmin wants to switch off when charging from external battery

Hi there,

I regularly have to charge my Garmin 810 from an external battery on long rides as the device's own battery doesn't last long enough.

I've been doing this for years with no difficulty but recently I've been having a lot of problems getting the battery to charge. I thought it might be that the cable was getting old so I bought a new one (not a Garmin genuine cable just a generic one). The new cable charges the device fine (although very slowly) but on my last ride, the Garmin keep trying to shut down while I was still riding, navigating and recording the ride.

This happened at completely random intervals; sometimes every couple of minutes and sometimes I could go 30 minutes between it happening. It's like the device feels that the ride is over, the attempted shutdown is similar to what happens if you don't turn the device off when you've got home, finished a ride, saved it and just forgotten to turn it off.

Has anyone else experienced this ? I'm wondering whether I need to get a genuine cable or it's something else?

I thought you were referring to the internal one. How long does that last on its own?

I would try again using a new Garmin cable. Many of the generic cables don't work well with Garmin products.

I think indeed you might have a battery failure; if the battery is that old/broken that it has an internal shortcut, even charging will not work and the shortcut will drop USB-voltage. I do not agree that a generic cable should not work. USB is a standard, which is as well adopted by Garmin.

I've used many different cables without issues. In fact, I've never used the Garmin cable. It's still in the box, unused.

My internal battery will do 6-7 hours on its own so really don't think it's failed, the problem only arises when charging from an external battery.

I will experiment with different cables, thanks for all the ideas

It could be the external battery, they all have a finite life. Nothing wrong with trying another cable, but a different external battery would be my next try.
