Tacx Training app stops (pauses) when Garmin Edge 830 connects via ANT+

Hi everyone,

Since two weeks I have the Tacx Flux S. When I connect it with the Tacx Training app (4.35.4 (8879)) on my MacBook (MacOS Monterey) via Bluetooth it's all working. But when I turn on my Edge 830, connect it with ANT+ to the Tacx Flux S and start Free Ride, after some time (sometimes several seconds, sometimes a bit longer) the app pauses.

Second thing is that the Edge also doesn't take the information from the app. So when I'm climbing 6% it still says 1% and descending with a lot of speed on the Tacx app (before it pauses) the speed on the Edge is slower.

Is this the way it should be or can anyone help me to use the Tacx app and the Edge 830 together? Thanks in advance, greetings Teun

  • Having multiple Bluetooth &/or ANT+ connections can be a problem, while some users don't have issues others do, I AVOID IT.

As for the difference between Tacx App speed & Garmin there used to be a Tacx support article explaining "virtual" speed on apps but basicly the Garmin just reports the speed as reported by the speed sensor (internal to the Trainer or external) whereas the Tacx App "calculates" speed using the reported power, gradient, rider+bike weight and perhaps a few other parameters. The BIG difference compared to the Garmin is that if you are on a down hill section the app calculation will calculate a higher speed due to the negative grade whereas the garmin will effectively be using a zero grade for all down hills. If your Flux is like mine then even a zero grade resistance is fairly high, certainly higher than if I was on the road.

PS it’s only a perception but I feel the zero grade resistance when the app is controlling the trainer is lower than the same (?) zero grade resistance when the Garmin is controlling, certainly my speed both up hill (slower than Garmin) & down (faster) with the app controlling is much closer to what I record outside for the same grades

  • Hey, thanks for answering! So it’s normal that when the app says I’m climbing 8%, the connected Edge doesn’t take the percentages but still keeps it’s own data? Why should you connect the Edge with your Tacx anyway if that is the case? I’m not a technician but as a consumer I would think that a company like Garmin who takes over Tacx must be able to get the data of the virtual training on the Edge, and vice versa. Or am I making big mistakes here?

  • As Alex Masalovich said in the Flux S forum the trainer can only be controlled by one device at a time. If you are using the Tacx App on the Mac then the stats of your virtual ride will be captured by the app and uploaded to Garmin Connect. You could pair the Flux to the 830 as individual speed, cadence sensors and power meter and NOT as an Indoor Trainer but this would mean you can end up with the ride stats being doubled up from the two devices. This is done modtly by people using Zwift and similar Apps.

If you were using the 830 to control the trainer then you pair it as an Indoor Trainer but the 830 can't co-ordinate with the video. I can't see why you would want the data "on the edge" as it will get to GC via the Tacx App?

PS I do often use my edge to control the Flux because I ride some GPS routes but this is a premium Tacx site feature and I don’t want to pay for something the edge can do but it would be nice if the “control” was more like the Tacx App
