Conduting an FTP test after fitness loss.

Hi, as my cycling fitness has dropped over the last 3 months I wanted to do an FTP test to see where I'm at. However, because my FTP is set to 317 from when I was fitter I didn't complete the test. I didn't realize that it took your FTP into account when doing the test. The upshot was that I could not complete the test.
I guess there are 2 questions.
1. Should I manually adjust my FTP to something much lower before I retry?
2. Why doesn't it just perform the test like it is your first time conducting the test, therefore, eliminating this problem?
