Edge 830 doesn’t show a newer SW version for update

My Garmin Edge 830 is still showing only the SW version 9.1 under system settings and tells me that there is no newer version available. How can I force to update to a newer SW version like 9.5?

P.S. Since several weeks I have problems to synchronize activities with the Garmin connect App. It takes more than 5 trials to upload a activity from the edge to the smartphone. This was something that wasn’t present when I bought the Garmin. This came later. Maybe this upload issues has something to do with a synchronization problem in general. 

  • Sounds like something is flaky in the BT connection between your Edge and phone.   First thing I'd do is update the Edge SW using Garmin Express.  You need Garmin Express installed on your computer and the Edge 830 connected via a USB cable to your computer.   If that works and BT connection is still problematic, I'd forget the phone on the Edge, forget the Edge on phone, uninstall the Connect app, reinstall it, and set up the BT connection again.

  • Thanks for your response. Garmin Express is a problem for me due to the fact I don’t own a Windows Computer and so far as I know Garmin Express runs only on windows. So that means there is no other way to update the firmware on the edge? In the Garmin Connect App I can see that the edge is connected and on the edge I get also updates for the weather but other things like notifications from the smartphone wouldn’t be shown. Does it makes a difference that the edge is only connected via Bluetooth BLE? I thought that there were at the beginning also a standard Bluetooth profile available. May be I am wrong.

  • There is a Garmin Express Mac.  If you have some other operating system, you might try a friend's PC or Mac to get your firmware updated, and once that's done revert to relying on the Connect phone app.

  • Today I had a ride in the mountains and during the ride the Edge switched off when I was on a trail. The device does a complete reboot after pressing the on button. For me it seems so that my Edge has some hardware problems. I will send it to Garmin for a check. 

  • If it were mine, I'd try a factory reset and see if that didn't sort things out. 

  • That was a good hint. After adding my wifi connection to the edge I was able to start manually a search for new firmware version and the search and the update to 9.5 was successful.
