Maps are updated using Garmin Express on a computer. It is pretty seamless. When new maps are available there will be an option to install them. There hasn't been an update for the Garmin maps for a good while now.
You can always use 3rd party maps (or make your own) and get newer ones as often as you like. https://extract.bbbike.org/ is a good source of Garmin compatible maps. Choose the Latin1 versions.
Garmin road/cycle maps don't contain elevation data either.
ClimbPro use the elevation data in the route file (if it includes it, many route planners add elevation data). Garmin units do have an elevation map installed which can be used if the route file has no elevation data.
ClimbPro uses the elevation data that is the course file. If the course file has none then the Edge should try replacing it with the DEM data the unit has. Currently that is not working correctly and the way around this is to make sure the course file has elevation data.
The Edge does have an elevation map file (DEM). Try navigating to a location and you will see that ClimbPro will work if there are climbs along that computed route.
The directions to see if there is a map update for your Edge can be found in this link. Be sure to use the supplied Garmin cable that was included in your box. Verifying the Maps Installed on a Garmin Edge Device
