I'm on Linux, which means there is no native version of Garmin Express for my computer. Currently, I have Express running under Wine, and it does most of the things Express is supposed to do, but it won't update the maps on my Edge 830. I think Garmin could solve this problem easily by allowing Linux users (or all users, for that matter) to download the maps directly from their servers and then copy them into the Edge's memory via USB cable themselves, but the company doesn't seem to be willing to do that.
Lately I've been experimenting with open-source maps which I have been able to install into the Edge's memory. Unfortunately, the maps that came with the Edge don't leave much memory for additional maps. So my question is this: if I copy the Garmin mapping files (those with .img, .gma, .unl, and .sum suffixes) to my Linux desktop and delete them from the Edge, can I later restore them by copying them directly back to the Edge without using Garmin Express? My current .img files are gmapbmap.img, gmapdem.img, gmapgc.img, gmapprom.img, gmapprom2.img, gmaptz.img, and D7786060A.img. Which of these can I safely delete? Can I safely restore them later? The .img files are my main concern; the .gma, .unl, and .sum files don't take up much memory. I also have an OSM cycle map, gmapsupp.img, installed, and I'd like to install some additional maps.
