Questions regarding doing a multi-day ride

Newbie needs help for epic ride

I am doing a 1400 mile ride, a buddy that is a garmin guru was going with me and show me how it all works. He is unable to go and I am kinda stuck.

I am uploading the ride in 5 courses. Each course should be 2-3 days of riding. Should I save each day's ride or pause it until the next day?

If I go off course for food, lodging etc. should I pause or save or just ride to where I am going and get the off course warning/recalculating prompts?

If I need to use navigation to get to off course places, can I do that without stopping the course or just use my phone to navigate off course?

  • The safest option is to rely on the GPS for essential navigation only. Save each daily stage as you go, so if a glitch occurs you won’t lose everything.

Definitely turn off route recalculation as it will only cause you grief at some stage, but leave off course warnings on.

It’s up to you if you want to pause or continue recording for coffee stops etc but I tend to just leave it recording so the whole day is recorded.

Use your phone for navigating to/from off course sites or detours as it will be more efficient.

  • Recording is separate from navigation. You can change the navigation, course, or stop it without effecting the recording.

It appears you are stopping every evening. If so, each day is a separate ride and should be recoded separately.

It might be safer/more reliable to record each data separately. I’m not sure if there are any limits to the length of ride the units can record. There aren’t any reports about that as far as I know. (Old units did have such a limit. If the current units have a limit, it’s much higher.)

Use the device for detours off course. The devices can only have one navigation “target” at a time. So, navigating to something off the course wound stop the course. You might need to navigate to a point on the course before you can reload it. If the point off the course is close, you might be able to just ride to it (leaving the corner we active).

You can either just ride back to the course or drop a pin on/near the course and navigate back to that. Then, reload the course and continue. It’s not less efficient than using your phone (not sure where that comes from). (Use your phone, if you like. But there’s no reason not to use the 830.)

Note that you can have the unit display courses that you are not using for navigation. Thus might make it easier to just ride back to the course.
