I thought the 830 was a bit smarter than this..

Hi all,

I really love the 830 but sometimes I truly don't understand the weird choices it makes while navigating a route.

Have a look at the figure, typical situation we all run into:

1. Original planning, straight ahead.
2. You take an unplanned detour, for a couple of hundred meters, because of construction to the road.
3. The 830 sends you back to the point where you left the original planned route.

So instead of saying that it found the planned route again and you just continue, it wants you to go back? I don't understand this.

Of course this is a very simple example which can be ignored while riding but situations can be far more complex so I get confused by the 830 suggestions.

Can this behaviour be changed in the settings or is the 830 just not that smart?
I would think that the navigation shouldn't be so stubborn if you're at least going into the right direction of the planned route.

The 830 software is horrible and dumb... so you have to be smart..... Just ignore the alerts and joint the route again... the 830 wil promt "route found"

Ahh, I see.. Thanks. A shame for such an expensive product because this is such a basic option.

Agree, you pay 100%, you get only 50% of what you reasonably expect.

Yep. That's what I've always done; look at the map, decide the best way to rejoin the course, start riding along it again, and the Edge picks up navigation as usual.

I believe the logic for what the Edge does is that you left the course inadvertently, still want to ride the entire course, so it sends you back to the point you left it. That might be the case sometimes, but often is not. I believe the 1030 and now 1040 offer reroute options to include rejoining the course at the nearest opportunity.

One would think that Garmin would put more effort into having the basic functions working properly. The Edge Series have been touted as having navigation capability when they in fact do not.

Note to Garmin: Spend less time on new features until you get the basics working better.

Marco P if this is occurring frequently on your rides, I'd recommend changing the route calculation to "Prompted" so that you can choose whether or not the Edge recalculates while you are navigating back to the route. You can follow the steps HERE to change this.

As looigi mentioned, when you get back to the original route and start riding on it again, the Edge will recognize this and the navigation will pick back up at that point.

Hi Eric,

Thanks. Will try and see if this makes it a bit better. I don't run into recalculation situations that often but when I do it has always been a frustrating experience with the 830.

As for your 2nd suggestion: this is true but it takes the 830 way too long to pick up navigation again. I mean, I know that I found the route again but the 830 doesn't for say 200 meters.

I think the whole recalc/finding route experience could be improved a lot.

Turn off recalculation on the 830. It is the best solution.

Hi Eric, Thanks for your hint, but this is really a shortcoming of this 830 device. In my humble opinion, this should be fixed by Garmin. (forums.garmin.com/.../feature-request-enhancement-route-recalculation-feature)
