Speed/cadence sensor fail doesnt revert to GPS

My speed/cadence sensor started to lose battery life during a ride. When it lost signal, the Edge, although tracking location on the map, stopped recording any speed/distance. Should this not default back to GPS for speed/distance when there are no other sensors connected?

If the sensor dies then yes you will start to get speed/distance from the GPS but when the battery is failing in your speed sensor it may not completely cut out making the Edge unit think it is still working and so not switch over to GPS.
