Edge 830 turn prompts not working

Is Turn Guidance turned on?

Yes - i double checked the setting - it is turned on

When the course is loaded and Ride is selected, when you are on the map screen and touch the top of the screen which shows the next turn, does a list of all the upcoming turns appear?

i get nothing at the top of the screen where i expect to see the directions...

So as i continue to search through all the menus:

Activity Profiles > Road > Navigation > Navigation Prompts > 1-Map or 2- Text Only
the default on my 830 was Text Only , text to what ???

I changed this setting to MAP. Started the saved route > choose "Ride" > "navigate to the beginning of the course?" > Yes > turn navigation appears at the top of the map section as expected.

Where exactly does the "TEXT ONLY" go to>???

With the setting set to map, when you approach a turn a zoomed map comes up and counts down the distance to the turn. When it is set to text, I think all you see is text at the bottom of the screen indicating the upcoming turn. I never use the text setting.

The missing bit may be the setting  for the  "Guide Text" ie the directions than can be displayed in the top of the map screen

Also, depending on which planning site you do the route planning you may or may not get a course with "Course Points" which can be confusing if you are also using "Turn Guidance", there are lots of posts relating to "Course Points". If you use Garmin Connect Route Planner you won't get course points but other sites will generate them for turns and can duplicate the notices you get from Turn Guidance.
