Display intensity

Has something changed with the display brightness?  I usual set my Garmin to auto brightness and backlight always on.  Since the last updates it seems that this works as before in sunlight or shade.  But when I turn so that I’m blocking the direct sunlight the display is unreadable.  If I change the brightness setting to 70% this doesn’t happen.  But then the battery drops about 12% per hour.

  • You shouldn't need the backlight on at all to see the display in direct sunlight (or shade).

Are you wearing polarized sunglasses when doing this?  If the angle of the polarisation in your sunglasses is close to 90° of the polarisation angle of the Garmin's screen (all LCD screens have a polarisation filter) then the screen will look dark.

  • My question was whether something had changed. This was not a problem until recently

But to answer your question, yes I have polarized glasses but have for some years.  The display works fine with brightness set at 70%.  Not when it’s set to auto in the conditions I described.

Regarding backlight, if the backlight goes off I can’t read the display even sitting at my desk with no sunglasses.
