Edge 830 turns itself on after being disconnected from charge

  1. Connect to charger - unit turns itself on.
  2. Turn the unit off
  3. Disconnect from charger - unit turns itself on.

Can I stop BOTH of these auto-wakes from happening?  I've repeatedly pulled the charger out and not realised the unit turned itself on, then gone to ride the next day and it's flat.

  • That is normal and it’s done that forever.

  • Mine doesn't, if I charge it when it's switched off, the display shows the charge level, but it doesn't switch on. And when I disconnect the charger it stays off.

  • On the 1030, I have found that if the original Garmin cord is used it will turn off after being unplugged. If I use a non Garmin cord, it will turn on after being unplugged.

  • After all the replies I am thinking the cord is a factor in behavior.

I wonder if a power only cord behaves one way and a power/data another?

I have mine set on a 8 outlet USB charging station with a mix of cords and do notice inconsistent behavior. I also usually just put the unit to sleep vs power off.

Now to play around a bit.

  • Hmmm I'm not using a garmin cord, I don't think I got one with my 830

  • Interesting, good to know it's at least possible.

  • Came here today to ask this exact question. It's been like this on all my edge units and always wondered why. I plug it in and it turns on, sits there looking for GPS and sensors and what not, and becomes really hot. Just a a waste of energy, and battery life I guess.

  • 830 (F/W9.4)
If my 830 is powered off
Plug in charger - 830 displays battery percentage
Unplug charger - 830 powers off

    If my 830 is asleep
Plug in charger - 830 wakes up and displays the Home screen
Unplug charger - 830 remains awake and on Home screen

    Hope that helps

    Barry

To sleep the 830 - tap the LHS button
To power off the 830 - hold the LHS button and tap the power icon that appears onscreen.

  • The 530 does the same, a damm nuisance and I've been caught out many a time when I have turned the power source off leaving the 530 connected to find it flat when I want it.

The 800 never did this and I have no other device that does it including mobile phones etc. The Garmin engineer who thought this was a good idea needs sacking. Only an idiot could think this was a good idea.

What I have found though is if I use the original Garmin cable or any other data cable, the 530 will turn on when disconnected from the power, but if it is just a power cable, it does not happen.

  • Thanks for the info Barry.  I've done a bit of testing and this happens in both situations - where the unit is slept, or where the unit is fully powered off using the three-second power button hold and selecting "Power Off"

It sounds like there is another factor that's influencing this
