Touch Screen Sensitivity Bug

Been noticing this for a couple months. When it's raining, the touch screen starts going mad, so I lock the screen (side note, the rain still somehow "swipes" the screen, but my fingers don't do squat, thanks for the non-lock lock). Later, after unlocking the screen and wiping it off, the touch sensitivity is essentially gone. If they work, taps are delayed by 10-15 seconds, and usually offset from the actual touch location. The only way to fix it is to stop the activity and power cycle the unit.

I don't know 100% how to reproduce it, but I imagine one tech, an edge 830, and a garden hose with a sprayer could figure this out...

  • I don't have any screen protector or use a case.

I wonder if the dropdown has something to do with it, because that does get triggered frequently when the screen is locked.

  • I've noticed that the screen can be less responsive with the protective foil on.

Even at 10°C I had problems with the screen.

  • So you advise me to remove the protective film?

  • I get the same non-responsive screen after it starts raining and I lock the screen every single time it rains. Sometimes its hard to lock because it's already got raindrops on it. Scared of power cycling in case I lose the ride, esp a big one.

I've tried with/without screen protector - makes no difference.

  • Give it a go. New protective film doesn't cost much, so can always go back using it.

I have a friend who uses 830 for the past 2 yrs and he's cycling during winter too, and we get below 0°C and he had no issues with the screen.

I haven't asked him how the screen worked when in moist/rain.

  • Nice to know. For me it is only if the screen is a little wet.

If you lock the screen (it is not a screen lock in any way btw, shame on you Garmin), you should be ok and not lose the ride. But you have to wait until the screen is responsive again, to save the ride)

  • OK thanks for the info

  • Adding the Remote would give you the option of using the programmable button to "Stop Timer", then I suspect you could safely shut down without losing the ride.  From what I remember, the ride will still be there when you turn back on, and save then.  (I just checked the options for my Remote programmable button and "Save Ride" isn't an option, but "Stop Timer" is.)  I know the Remote is a work-around, but it gives you real buttons that allow paging through screens and Stop Timer when your screens are wet.

I'm a huge fan of the Remote because with mtb it's often just not possible to remove one hand from the bar to mess with the head unit.  (I'm using with a 530.)  For me the Remote isn't a work around, it is how I prefer to interact with the Edge during the ride.  It was a major consideration for not switching to Wahoo.

  • I've decided to get the remote anyhow. Quite expensive for such a thing, but it works nicely! Good to use even when on uneven roads where taking off one hand off a handlebar might be risky.

  • All Garmin accessories are stupid expensive!  The "case" is just a silicone rubber band with bumps on it and they get $20 for it!  Pricing is a bit insulting, but it's part of the game.
