Upload .fit file from Garmin connect? (Edge 830 noob)

Not Edge 830 owner.
I've got a .fit file for an course that I downloaded from ridewithgps.com

It seems that .fit was claimed to be better for the Edge, rather than .tcx or .gpx.
When I used garmin comment web page, I get failure in trying to upload the .fit file.
I've started to search around, without any clear answer regarding .fit files.

can I take this turn-by-turn .fit file and put it onto my new Edge 830?
or can i only use .tcx files.

Thanks for the info on how to get this course onto my device.

FWIW I'm on a windows 10 pc

  • You can use FIT, TCX, or GPX files on any of the Edges (including the 830). They all work the same including for "turn guidance"  (the big white arrows). FIT and TCX can include "course points", which are another and separate type of turn instruction.

If you are using Ridewithgps, you can use an IQ app (an app you install on your Garmin). You'll also need to have Garmin Connect Mobile running on your phone and your 830 paired to your phone.

It's easier if you pin the route in Ridewithgps. It's also advisable not to have too many pins. You'll need a Ridewithgps account to pin routes (the free level is fine).

You can use the app I wrote or use Ridewithgps' app.

If you plug your 830 into your PC (it will show up as a USB drive) copy the course files (again, any of the 3 formats) to \Garmin\Newfiles.

If you use GPX (there's no reason to but it will work), use the "gpx track" option. Note that you might only be given a GPX file to use (so, you need to know that format works fine).

  • Without your app, it seems that GC only allow the import of tcx and gpx files.  Is that correct?   if I wanted to use .fit, I need to manually place it onto the Edge 830?  is that correct ?

Where do I drop the .fit file within the /Garmin folder?  the /NewFiles subfolder?  /Courses subfolder?

  • FIT files should work but, with courses on Ridewithgps, you don't need the extra step of involving Garmin Connect.

My app (and Ridewithgps') doesn't use Garmin Connect at all. These actually download the FIT file (but, again, it doesn't matter!).

Copy the files to \Garmin\Newfiles .

  • fit files work. put it in the new files directory. it will be converted to a course when you start your 830.
