Record a bike ride on Edge or Epix?

I have an Edge 830, recently bought an Epix Gen 2 and have a chest HRM. ( I suspect the question is relevant for the Fenix 7 range too )

I’m looking for advice on whether I should track an outdoor cycle ride with the Epix, using extended display mode, or just use the Edge. Other than the ability to show ride details on both the watch and Edge with the extended display mode, are there any benefitsusing one over the other or functionality that won't work in one of the scenarios?

  • I have both: an Edge 830 and an Epix. Because of the bigger display, I normally use the Edge for bike rides connected with an hrm pro, varia rtl516, speed sensor, it is more comfartable (for me). The Epix often stays on the wrist and I am listening music via Aftershoks Openmove (bone conduction: you can still hear/listen the enviroment noise) during the ride. Of course, I use the the Epix sometimes on the handlebars, too.

Btw: the Epix is handeling rerouting much better than the Edge 830.

I don´t use extended display mode, so nothing to report about that.

  • My personal view - I don't use the extended display function at all as I prefer to use my F6 and 830 as separate and independent devices.

What I normally do is to link HR, cadence etc to both F6 & 830 and to record on both.  At the end of the ride I only discard the F6's recording if the 830 sync was successful.  (As I am of the opinion the Edge's tracking is a bit better than the F6, due to eg its mounting position)

For incident detection &Live Tracking I use my F6 as it is closer to the phone in the back pocket (BT distance / obstructions ) and maybe more practical if I need to call for assistance using a device 'attached' to my body.

  • I prefer to wear the watch on the wrist and simply set it to broadcast the HR to the Edge 830.

I then record the activity with the Edge 830.

This also saves battery life on the watch not having to do as much.

  • Just use the edge and safe the watches energy.
Intensity Minutes, trainings status and co will be synced via Physik Trueup. This was not working a few years ago so some people claim you have to wear the watch, track an activity and discard that instead of safing but this is BS.
Or use the time to charge the watch and let it stay at home.

  • Using FR945 and Edge 530. Main account on FR945 and it is connected to phone. Also to strava with segments etc. FR is used for numerous other activities so it sumes up for example intensity minutes from running and biking.

Edge on second account. Synchronized by wifi not via phone. Used for backup records and navigating (courses uploaded via bascecamp or wifi).

In that matter i use FR945 for secondary navigation when i have to detour from main route for something and then back on it.

Downside: no phone notifications on edge, need second premium account for live segments on edge (i dont have it nor do miss it), no alarm function (and other connected functions)

  • It would be great if there was a watch/edge activity that links the two and the various data you could get from both devices. Even different data screens on each device - to optimize your ride. :-)
