Garmin Connect Insights

I have an Edge 830 and am a 63 year old 55kg man. Recently I purchased a Trek Emonda SL6 eTap with my first Power Meter.

I'm looking for some feedback on Garmin Connect Insights. My Average speed, Average Weekly Distance, Average Weekly Duration & Activities are all "70% + more than other male users". However, my Max Average Power is only "18% more than other male users". I'm pretty fit and have a VO2 max of 48 which puts me in the top 5% for my age.

With the risk of ridicule (take it easy.... this is my first post!!), can someone give me an idea why I can get get good results with all the Insights except for the Max Power?

  • I think it’s because of „target group“.
you are above average for all stats wich are open for every „recreational“ user. If I, for example, use the vivosmart wristband from my wife and track a ride with it (using the phones GPS), I will account to that 70% you are above. Especially those rides wich are in town, going get groceries or the kids with the trailer from the daycare.
if you look at that small amount of cyclists who use powermeter, this are most likely people training and riding serious. And, please don’t feel disrespected, a lot of them will be younger than you and will be able to put down more power. Loss of muscle mass is a thing if you are above 60. VO2Max is age group based, the Others not.

  • Thanks BeneGI. That makes a lot of sense - whilst I've been riding for several years now, a power meter had not really been on my radar until I purchased my Emonda with a Power Meter fitted as standard. I should have bought one when I had younger legs! Slight smile . Don't worry, I certainly don't feel disrespected, I love looking at stats and wanted to understand why this particular result differred so dramatically from my other stats. Thanks again - really appreciate your feedback!
