Why won't Garmin solve the reroute issue?

We all know the reroute option whilst navigating on the 830 just doesn't work well. I'd go so far as to say it's not fit for purpose. I understand it works considerably better on the 1030+. Surely this is simply just a software solution for garmin to improve it for the 830? The hardware is already on unit...they just have to use the same algorithm used by the 1030+.

Why don't they do it?

And it worked much better on my old Edge 1000. I think Garmin wants me to buy a Wahoo Elemnt ROAM or a Hammerhead Karoo 2. On these devices re-routing works almost perfectly.

  • I've always used Garmin devices and apart from the reroute issue the 830 is fantastic...alas the reroute experience is such that I too am considering the Karoo 2. Sort it out Garmin or youll likely lose customers Confused

  • I concur. If Garmin does not improve their routing and re-routing then I will look elsewhere when I next go shopping for a bike computer.

  • I totally agree it’s not fit for purpose, asking you to do a u turn is not really re routing. I hope they can do something to improve it

  • It is unfortunate Garmin hasn't brought this improved re routing to the 530/830 but that is their business decision for whatever reason.  The reasons are unlikely to be released outside of Garmin.  One can guess that it was decided so to not lose sales of the 1030+ to the 830/530.

What it does mean is that any future units should have this improved re routing.

I bought the 830 because of its form factor. I don't want a device such as big as the 1030. The product details promise a re-routing function which in fact is not present. I will not replace the 830 by a 1030. I believe that Garmin will lose sales because many users will change to Hammerhead or Wahoo. After 13 Edge years I ordered a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt V2 yesterday.

  • It does offer re routing - the same re routing as all other Edge units apart from the 1030 plus.  The re routing just doesn't work as people would expect it to.  It is rubbish and is better turned off.

  • I wouldn't so much call it rerouting as I would "return to route."  I think Garmin's logic is if you are following a preplanned route, and you deviate from that route, you'd rather get directions back to the route at the point where you left it than be given a new route to your next checkpoint (which would be rerouting).

  • Checkpoint?

How does the device know what your next checkpoint is?

Routing back to the point you left the course is useful for some types of riding (Randonees, for example).

One reason to route back to the last point is to avoid the extra computational complexity of having to keep picking a new target point to navigate to.

The 800 would abandon the loaded course and compute a new route to the end point. Presumably, because it was easier computationally. Keep in mind that these are still slow computers that many people want to have long running times with.

Why do Hammerhead and Wahoo manage it and Garmin is not capable of?
