MTB profile and vo2

Hi, longtime user and forumreader but I am bit a lost. I mountainbike and run, does the MTB profile on the Edge contribute to the cycling v02 estimate? I don't train, but download tracks and navigatie with my edge with hart-rate monitor, I suspect not, am I right?

And a follow up question would be, is mountain biking adding 'info' to my training status on my Fenix watch?

Or is it just the cycling profile on the Edge that does calculations and sync with the training status? I do have a status, because I run a lot, but I am now trying to understand how it works in more detail and found no answers on the Garmin site.

  • No, you need a power meter on the bike for that. But it does contribute to your training load.

  • Check, thanks. That explains the V02 didn't change last mtb year - is it the same for the cycling profile? does it need a power meter of is cycling approached differently than MTB ?

  • When you say "cycling profile" and "MTB profile", do you mean when you start a ride and there is that menu to select Road, Indoor, Mountain, etc.?  If so, those are only "device profiles". They only control what screens are displayed and other device settings so you can tailor them to your activity (and you can edit any of them any way you want). They aren't "user profiles" or "activity profiles" that change how your data is managed (unless I'm misunderstanding). All of them are cycling and will contribute to your training status. For example I switch between "Road", "Commute", "Indoor", etc., and all contribute to my training status, VO2max updates, FTP detection, recovery time, etc.

As for multiple devices, I don't have firsthand experience (only have the Edge) but in theory if you enable "Physio True Up" on the devices they are supposed to sync the status together. However it's also widely reported that it often doesn't work correctly, so you would have to try it and see how it does in your case.

  • Yup, thanks both. Since I learned a while ago that my Fenix watch for example is (i.e. was, it has a fix computing it since the 6 series I believe) in trail run profile/mode/setting not adding to vo2 calculation I couldn't understand what it actually does do. And I expected cycling profile on the Fenix also adding up to the cycling vo2, but I guess you would need a power for this too.

I guess I don't understood the basics of sport data enough. I do now a little bit more.
