Heart rate off when indoors on Wahoo Kickr Smart.

I did my first workout on a Wahoo Kickr Smart trainer and the only connection I didn't have was an HR bluetooth strap (no ant+ on my laptop), so I put on my Garmin strap with my Edge 830 and the HR was way off.  I was up at 186bpm and it was saying I was 135, and wouldn't climb.  I had to check it next to my apply watch let alone knowing my chest was pounding in zone 5.

I have never noticed any issue like this outdoors on a ride. Any insights would be appreciated. I heard people say to use bluetooth indoors and not ANT+ as the connection, is this why?

  • IDK. I've always used ANT+ indoors (trainer, HRM, cadence) with an ANT+ dongle on my computer and had no issues doing so.  I have the dongle dangle on a short USB extension cable so that it hangs below the stand/desk I have my laptop on.  In my experience, HR being off is usually due to the HRM itself.  I have an old Garmin strap (~12 years old) that has been pretty much bulletproof and it still works great as long as it has good connection with my chest.  I did have to bake it out once with the battery door off on the dash of my car to dry it out.  I also use Scosche optical HRMs.
