Bug in the Sony GPS chipset with GPS 4.80 ?

dear

I'm wondering that is it a real bug in the chipset and the Edge 830 is unable to receive neither Galileo or Glonass signals (depending on the GNSS settings in the menu) or just displaying issue here in the GNSS screen?

I put side by side an old Edge820 (with MTK GPS chipset, fw12.70, gps 2.50 ) and an Edge 830 (with Sony GPS chipset, fw 9.10, gps 4.80) and a Xiaomi MI8 as reference (dual-band, BCM47755 GPS chipset)

Why doesnt the Edge 830 get neither Glonass or Galileo signals? (as You see, the Edge 820 does, #72,73,74 Sat number with Glonass, and #14,15,17 Sat numbers with Galileo, these Sat numbers are different in Garmin devices than the official PRN numbers but it is not a problem now) and CPE file is the most current in the 830 as the EPO file too in the 820, i left the units at least 15mins above open sky (honestly, the 820 needs only a few seconds to receive Glonass or Galileo signals after the GNSS setting's change so i dont think it is the problem...)

  • Sorry- where can I find the above shown ggs page on a 830er?  I can´t remember, how to get itFlushed

Wanted to take a look, what my 830er is showing...

  • As far as I remember- have you shove via display the gps side to the left and galileo and glonass are shown on a separate page?

    Supplement:

sorry, so it works on my gpsmap 66i.

  • on your main training page tap the display, then a "frame" will appear on the bottom, a left and a right-direction triangle and a house, push and hold the right triangle for 6secs apprx and the service menu will be shown up.

  • on Edge series it shows only 1 page due to it (the chipset) works with only 12 GNSS channels as i know. the GPSMAP is a different series with much better GNSS capabilities (especially the new dual-band 66sr ) and with much more channels so that needs more screens displaying it

  • but if I'm not too confused yet, as I remember it (my 830) showed the Galileo and Glonass satellites in the past when I checked last year , but that was with a different main firmware and an older gps firmware version (just i had so many Garmin devices in the past years that i dont know which one showed it and which did not and with which fws... :) ). Or my 830 got corrupted somehow and i should do a master reset on it ...

  • Thanks for the hint. I was searching in the normal settings for that functionality. (really can’t remember, that it is “hidden” there). Only GPS shown for me, too.

  • Hello Luko79,

Did Garmin react on your suggestions? I also don't see Glonass satellites, and I lose my GPS signal in small tunnels. Thats why my Strava Live segment is lost on-screen. Very frustrating.

    regards Remko

  • no, i didnt. honestly i didnt try this sat page with the latest 9.xx fws but i will check it today.

if a strava segment has a tunnel part (question is how long), You will lose the live segment feature, it is not this sony chipset bug, it is the way as the live segment feature "working".

but if You have problem with GPS signal reliability, try to master reset your Edge device (i always take photos about the data pages and settings and after a master reset i can easily set it up again, i dont trust in the backup setting FIT files so i prefer to set it up again everything completely manually)

  • Restoring backed up FIT files to the New Files folder has worked well for me.

  • I just opened up the screen on my Edge 830, and it is showing Sat #66 and #72.  So it appears to be working but is limited to 12 channels.  When I select Galileo, I see a 154 and the last position swaps between 158, 170 and 173.  In either case the first 10 channels appear to always be the GPS satellites.
