Poll: should the user be able to en-/disable the directional arrow/chevron functionality?

  • I am happy for the users who like them to have them but I have never had a ride yet where they provided any useful information and they are ugly and a gross clutter of my tiny screen, I would like to disable them, please

  • Yeah, they just spam the display. In the 530 forum, someone suggested to give the next two arrows after the current position triangle a red color, that would be a great info for crossing courses etc.(I like that idea!). forums.garmin.com/.../1328538

But this mass accumulation is wasting display and confusing users...and the user should be able to decide, if the chevrons are en-/or disabled.

  • I doubt it's generally confusing users at all or more confusing than not having them. Knowing the direction of other parts of the course can be useful.

The two colored arrows might be more work to program than it's worth (it adds nothing in many cases).

I'd rather have the chevrons than not (but my 1030 screen is bigger).

I don't have an issue with have an option to turn them off.

  • Mhm, seems not to be a theme that people care much about? 179 views, but only 4 votes...

  • My club is entirely "looong distance" so course following (which is different to "navigation") is very important as is clarity of map display as the rider might be riding multi day / multi night in all conditions (without enough sleep) . Most club members have stayed on v7 or downgraded if they had gone to v8, they don't need the arrows and find them clutter. many of us use a map format called "OnRoad" which removes a lot of the normal map clutter so Garmins adding chevron clutter is not appreciated. As you can see from my examples above by the time the chevrons obscure much of the route it becomes hard to actually see where you are.

Otherwise I reckon most "bicycle riders" these days rarely venture outside Zwift or equivalent so don't need navigation so rarely even see the chevrons

Normal Map                  vs   On-Road (even better without arrows as they

can hide the road elements like the horse shoe bend at Longny)

  • I'm not sure if anybody uses the regions (the green areas) for navigation. If so, I agree they should not be there.

I've done "looong distance" rides and don't see a problem with the chevrons. They are useful in some places and easily ignored in others.

    This is silly.

I doubt people who are using the devices for navigation are generally having the problems you are talking about. It appears the chevrons are a popular feature (and that your opinion is in the minority). But who knows! I have no issue with being able to turn them off.

  • I have no issue with being able to turn them off.

Yep, not asking for anything to be taken away from those that like them but just the ability for me (and perhaps other  members of our international club with branches in at least 70 countries)  to turn them off.

In the 10 years of using various Garmins I have updated every release until now and the "direction arrows". The V8 maps are slightly better and the "improved" Course Points in v8.63 beta are very nice and I would like to use them but I will forego these due to the arrows. Perhaps they are ok on 1030+ with twice the screen area and better resolution? (PS By the way the chevrons are 40% bigger & placement different if the "Turn Guidance" is disabled, for some odd reason)

  • (PS By the way the chevrons are 40% bigger & placement different if the "Turn Guidance" is disabled, for some odd reason)

That is odd. I suspect it's "random" (due to something other than the turn guidance state).

They are the same size on my 1030+.

  • I suspect it's "random" (due to something other than the turn guidance state)

Perhaps but it happens every time on my 530 I have the Turn Guidance disabled, same course, map etc without any other apparent difference ???, I have sent it to the beta team anyway. Other club members with 830s have the same size difference

  • I don't mind whether they can be disabled as long as there is NO risk that they disappear completely. From my point of view it is a big step forward since they have been introduced. I mostly do ATB/MTB with navigation on and it helps a lot when trails cross each other (often, if you use single trails on small biking destination in Germany).
And to be honest, arrows was what I missed most after switching from Wahoo as their routing drawings was mostly perfect in most cases.
