Edge 830 doesn't recognise .IMG

Hi all,

Forgive me if someone replied to this issue in the past, but I couldn't find the right answer.

Using macOsx or Windows, I am experiencing the same problem loading IMG extra maps. I watched a lot of videos /pages on Internet explaining that I have to copy the .IMG map into the Garmin folder, but it doesn't work for me. I copy the file but it is not listed in the maps installed into the Edge.

The only way I've found to do it is using Windows, GMaptool and Mapinstall to load the map into the unit. I was unable to do it in Mac OS. It seems that loading maps should be easy, but in my case, never worked.

Does anyone have the same issue? Is there anything I am doing wrong?

Where are you getting the files from?

Where are you copying them to?

Do you see it listed in the map list on the device?

Is it enabled?

Where are you getting the files from? - Since I live in Côte d'Ivoire and the maps available are not good enough, a friend is creating local maps for MTB use. He adds a layer to a OSM map every time he rides with the tracks he did. Then he generates an IMG file merging all layers: OSM plus all the routes he did.

Where are you copying them to? - /Garmin

Do you see it listed in the map list on the device? - NO

Is it enabled? - I can't because it is not listed

How big is the file?

What device does it work on?

It is 500kb.

Is your friend adding the MTB tracks to the source OSM map data, anyone (registered) can add/change OSM Maps data (hopefully they know what they are doing) and then extract sites update the available maps frequently so that everyone in Côte d'Ivoire could enjoy them. https://extract.bbbike.org/ seems to have reasonable base (road) maps for Côte d'Ivoire

I downloaded several .img files (Spain, France, Germany) from freizeitkarte-osm.de and copied them to the Garmin folder. All maps could be selected on the Edge 830.

There is nothing that indicates the 830 has a problem with using map files. If there was, we likely would have heard about it before. I suspect Garmin produces its own maps the same way this site does.

It's much more likely that there is a problem with this particular file (which is why I want to look at it).

Yes, thanks, but unfortunately OSM maps here are not so good. Of course, they have main roads but not off-roads and paths. Pretty far from the level we have in Europe.

I will let him know the possibility of adding information to OSM.
