Navigation doesn’t start activity

After some fw update (I’m not sure, but somewhere after FW8) I’m expiriencing problem, that starting navigation doesn’t start activity automatically. So I’m robbed of few km’s until I realize that.

Previously I didn’t have to start activity separatelly when started navigation.

  • Starting navigation has never started an activity.

The only options for starting an activity are by pressing the start button or having the unit auto start at some speed you select.  You can also have it prompt you to start when you reach a speed you have selected..

  • Unfortunately I didn’t experience this before, otherwise I wouldn’t notice that behavior now.

It has never happened before, that navigation wouldn’t start activity, I have never lost beggining of my tracking. And my Edge settings is still same.

  •  Navigation and activity recording have always been entirely separate and independent. You could start/stop one, the other, or both.  Perhaps you had auto start enabled and now you don't.

  • Like I said before, my Edge settings is still same.

This weekend I have again tested behaviour of Edge. On Sunday navigation started activity automatically. It has really inconsistent behaviour.

  • When you load a course and are (very) close to the starting point of that course, the Edge will ask if it is OK to start the activity. It doesn't ask that if you are not close enough to the starting point. Maybe that is what you experience?

  • I'm not sure if it is related how close I'm to the starting point.

Nevermind, I guess it shoudl start activity automatically. Or I'm not supposed to start activity, when I hit navigation Go! button?

  • The expected behavior is that you will either manually start your activity, or you will accept the prompt to start the activity for you. Either way, the actual activity recording will not start on its own when a course is selected.

The only exception would be if you are using an Activity Profile where you have selected Auto Start as a setting. Info on that can be found here: https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/edge830/EN-US/GUID-F2A490BD-1D4B-4BB8-97C5-90B55733092F.html

  • Ah!  I was suffering through this, because the 830 has a touch screen and "displays" the sideways triangle. BUT PRESSING THAT DOES NOT "START" THE ACTIVITY!  Unbelievable that nowhere does Garmin documentation differentiate between what is"touched" on the screen and what is done with the "START BUTTON" at lower right corner. I'm going to assume that pressing the button also "stops" the activity. But we'll see today when I test out the theory. Garmin documentation is VAGUE and creating a lot of heartache. Nor do they tell you anywhere that you'll be prompted by a big symbol on the middle of your screen to push the start button rather than tap the BIG PROMPT SYMBOL. I'm shaking my head.

Once you learn this, then there is the option of the manual, prompted, or automatic start.

Plus there is the option of having a navigation screen added to your activity, so you get metrics AND navigation--but you will have to do a lot of youtube research to ever get there. I think the corporate standard nowadays is INTUITIVE. See Apple for examples.

I almost returned the 830 and researched other brands today--because of this issue. I wonder how many "screen complaints" arose because of this confusing issue of having both a touch screen but also "button prompts" on the screen? Hmmm.. . . . .
