Is the Garmin 830 incapable of updating courses while tracking a ride?

I've noticed that if I am actively tracking a ride, or a ride is on pause, the head unit can not update the course list. For example, I started riding today and realized I didn't upload my course. I pulled off the side of the road, opened my phone and app, and had the app send the course to the head unit. The app registered that it was sent, and said to check the head unit. I did, and the course was not there. I rode for an additional 15 minutes, and checked again, but the course was not there.

I then paused the ride, and went back to the phone to push the course to the unit again. Again, the app said the course was sent, but the head unit did not have it in it's list.

I ended my ride, and went through all the closing screens and summary pages. Almost instantly the head unit popped up a notification that the course was added. Sure enough, it was there.

Either this is a bug and the course list should update when the app sends the course, or the app should indicate that it can not send the course until the current ride is ended.

I’ve noticed this as well. Syncing is only possible if there is no activity in progress.

It’s my only problem i have with Garmin: This is not a bug, its a feature. It’s the only reason im looking envious at the wahoos in my family. If im alone, i seldom need to replan. In a small group with a few different strong riders, it happens sometimes. Funny enough that it is no problem to plan a new route on the device itself.

Unfortunately I couldn't get it successfully sync my courses offline.

I use it to sync routes from RideWithGPS and it works as expected.

Make sure you configure it to know your route source and make sure you’re trying the widget and not the app. The app won’t run with an activity in progress.

Does it work for you when phone doesn't have internet connection?

The update works if the phone has no internet as long as I had the route downloaded to the phone already. I can push it to the unit when there isn't an activity ongoing.

You can not sync with an active tracking going. You must end the activity and then try to update the route.

No but I’m not sure how it could download from RWG without internet. Do you mean you can’t access internet via cellular?

Maybe I’m not understanding what you’re trying to do…
