Edge 830 Navigation - Re-routing

Hello,

as generally  known the Garmin Edge 830 navigation is terrible in regards of re-routing. For example instead of guiding you 10m back to the paralell route, it ask you to turn around and make a 1000m detour. Such navigation instructions are rediculous and annoying.

Is it planned to include with a firmware update the 1030 PLUS functionality such as: Skip Points and guide pack to the route in driving direction ?

Such base functionality hopefully is for GARMIN a matter of FW update and not only a new model.

Regards

  • One would think that Garmin would put extra effort into ensuring that the base functionality is up-to-date. In my experience, the Edge navigation algorithms are the basically same that Garmin used in their Car Nav units from 10-15 years ago. There is no excuse for this as I sure hope that the Edge has more cpu power than those old car units.

  • I have the Edge 530 and some roads are closed due to storm damage. It keeps on advising me to turn back instead of calculating an alternative.

Since I'm stubborn and know the area i take an alternate route myself. Finally after more than 2k it reroutes but first want to send me up the road against the direction of the route (see red arrow), i decided to ignore that and turn right, since eventually there would be an 180 turn!

Would be better if the reroute doesn't send you against the direction of the original route, where eventually a pointless 180 turn is required! Just continue in the correct direction skipping the missed part would be fine.

  • This is one of annoying situation I am regularly experiencing. GARMIN was improving obviously one Edge 1030+ as re-routing in direction of driving direction can be selected. Such basics should be integrated in a firmware update of existing models. I do not like the policy that lot of improvements which are purely SW related are only integrated into new models. Especially speaking about basics such as this terrible GARMIN edge re-routing performance. This is stone age performance. In an recent emergency I needed the shortest way back to my Start point. At a distance of 28km Edge 830 always tried to route me on a 35km long route (although shortest was selected, and no street limitations). Such terrible performance is out of any tolerance.

  • I am on the brink of changing teams to Hammerhead or Wahoo because of the rediculous rerouting of the 830. Please inform us about the rerouting update the 1030 plus is equiped with...

  • There is a detailed explanation in dc rainmakers Edge 1030 plus test in the mapping & navigation section:

    www.dcrainmaker.com/.../garmin-edge-1030-plus-in-depth-review.html

  • Thanks for the link, the explanation tells me the new rerouting options will not be available on the 830, it is not a starred option. Really sad to read..

  • Probably related. My previous Garmin devices 500, 800 and 1000 all would very quickly find the course "course found" if I had deviated for some reason and then rejoined the course. The 830 can take considerable time and distance to acknowledge back on course. Not a problem if you know the roads but not helpful if you don't.

  • If Garmin would be willed, they could easily add this via a fw update to the 830.
