autocalculate FTP not working

Somebody else posted that "It was also posted here (forums.garmin.com/.../new-edge-830-public-beta-5-44-now-available), easiest is to set FTP to Zero and delete all my 4 personal records on Edge, and reboot. If you do then a workout, it will detect your FTP (which will be 95% of your 20 min avg)."

But that was over a year ago. Can anyone verify that this actually works? I have a Forerunner 945 as well. First problem is you can't actually set it to "0". It requires it to be at least "1" so I'm already suspicious that the posted directions will work. I'm guessing I need to change FTP to "1" everywhere first to fix the problem.

Anyone have any success getting auto calculate FTP to work? It used to never bother me that it didn't until I took some time off from cycling, now I want updated numbers without doing an FTP test.

  • The autodetect FTP isn't just 95% of your 20 minute average power from a TT effort.  I have had new a FTP generated with nothing like that sort of ride.  I don't know what conditions will trigger it.  From the information on the Firstbeat website it does involve the unit detecting a specific type of HRV data combined with power and regular HR data over some sort of time period.  Firstbeat don't tell you how their FTP algorithm works for obvious reasons.

You do not get a new FTP generated very often in my experience.

To be honest if want to update my FTP value I just do a FTP test and work it out myself.  That is a guaranteed way of generating a FTP number.  I have done FTP tests and had my 830 tell me it has calculated a new FTP (not necessarily the same as calculated by the test protocol) and done FTP tests where it hasn't.
