Some questions about the 830

Hello,

I have a new 830 but I am not really happy about this device.  Before that I used an 810.

1. The Climb Pro Feature is per se nice, but the data is incorrect. I climbed about 300 hm, but the 830 says nearly 2000 hm... Also very flat Increases turn the Climb Pro sometimes on.

2. It is annoying that the Climb Pro agent turns on during navigation. Is it possible to deactivate this? I mean it should be only on when I swith to the site.

3. Virtual Partner is really not inactivatable?

4. The most annoying fact, however, is that I don't find any option to deactivate the navigation completely. I mean I load a GPX-Track on the device and I just like to show this track on the map. I hate the permanent messages like "deviation found" or "route found". The 810 and 800 could do that.

Thanks!

  • You can switch off most of the navigation by disabling the TBT option under courses

  • Everything you could do on the 800/810, you can do on the 830. Except set the activty profile odometer to a custom distance (if you like to keep track of your bike mileage on the unit). That went away with the shift away from discrete bike profiles starting with X20 units.

If you want activity profiles with a very similar layout for each of your bikes, you can also copy them to save the amount of effort required to set up each on individually. This can be found under "add new" on the Activity profile page. From there, you can make the required tweaks to dial in the data fields and pages that matter the most for each profile.

Can't help with the elevation issues other than wondering if the barometer sensor holes (on the bottom) are plugged up for some reason.

Climb Pro can be shut down-from the 3 horizontal bars, select "Activity Profiles", then the one you want to modify and scroll down- its the 6th item down. tap the slider switch and it will go from green to grey (off). You can't remove it from the data screen pages but you can keep it from appearing.

The Virtual Partner can be deleted (and added) as a screen but not as a navigation feature- go to the page where you modify an Activity Profile and select "Data Screens", scroll down and tap on Virtual Partner. It should pull up a screen that lets you remove it entirely or just show/hide it.  If you want to add it back, tap on "add new" and find it, the same way you would add new data screens (data fields/map/compass/elevation/etc). If you're just following a course that you've set to "always display" and not actually letting the unit do the navigation for you- you'll never see it. It will be on the map however if you're letting the unit do the turn by turn directions

To just just show but not navigate a route loaded on your device- select "navigation", "saved courses", the desired course, scroll down to "settings" and select "always display". From this page, you can also select the color the route will be displayed in. I usually select yellow while my history color is red (can be found in the activity profile under "navigation", "map" and scroll to the bottom) to provide a nice contrast between the two.

  • VP does not go away. If it's on the map then it's not turned off.

  • Thanks at all!

    1. I found the option to show it not automatically. Thanks!

    2. I don't mean the barometer. My device is almost new. The data of the Climb Pro is completely wrong.

    3. Yes I mean the VP in the map. It can not be deactivated.

    4. I think I found that option what I missed before:

    https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/edge830/EN-US/GUID-5FB6AF7B-6157-4AFC-B82B-C3AEED568646.html

Turn Guidance --> Enables or disables turn prompts.

Off Crs. Warnings --> Alerts you if you stray from the course.

    Thanks!

    Two more question :-)

    5. What does the "always display" - option impact?

    6. Is it possible to calibrate the auto backlight feature? I mean when I cycle in shadow the backlight dims higher. But without that it's light enough. My smartphone auto-backlight can also be calibrate.
