Edge 830 Update 8.1 restart loop

Hello,

my English is not so god.

After I installed Version 8.1 my Edge 830 restart in a loop.

I have the Reset durin the 2 button under and the Power Button. When I select the language the 530 restart and i can not select anything.

Windows 10 cannot find any Drive letter from the Edge.

Is the 530 demage? What can I do?

Thank

  • Same issue happens to me. But I cannot even get past the Garmin loading screen

  • Maybe to elaborate some more. After the Update the device restarted and booted successfully, but at some point I noticed that the screen froze. So I hold the power button to shutdown the device, after which it instantly restarted and after that freezing again at "Loading courses, workouts and locations...". Now I cannot shutdown the device (because it just restarts) and cannot connect it with PC/macOS

  • I had success in getting my 830 (I'm on my 2nd replacement unit - this has been an ongoing debacle for the last two weeks...)  back to OS 6.2 after experiencing the dumpster fire of 8.1 by doing this-

Launch Express and disable the auto update option. Once your stable and on an older OS, it'll load 8.1 and prompt you to but not install it.

To get the old OS loaded- press and hold the Lap button while plugging the unit into your computer, this will force Mass Media Mode and get it to appear on your computer as a drive.

load the last stable OS as you would a beta OS (placing the GUPDATE.GCD file from the OS of choice under the Garmin Folder), you can find them below. I don't view 8.0 as stable it's crashed 2 different units on me (its a couple of pages back in this forum if it worked for you)- OS 6.2 works on my device and unlocks trailforks, 7.1 works but doesn't unlock trailforks for me, 8.0 is constantly reloads when trying to select a different profile and 8.1 just dumpster fire rapid reloads mid boot sequence.

Power it on while pressing down on the top left and top right of the screen. It'll load up and then for a moment offer the option to go backwards to the previous OS. Tap fast on the bottom right when it gives you that option or you'll have to do it again.  It'll now load that OS leaving you with a stable device and having to reset all your profiles and sensors.

    OS 7.1 download-

And out of idle curosity- what happens when your finally stable and boot the device into the self test mode (press and hold start/stop while powering on) and perform the memory test. My 830 and at one other in here both fail the Basemap Checksum test AND are have nothing but problems going past OS 7.1. Be curious if your units do as well. I can't do a thing about it but it may point to a hardware failure or inconsistency on Garmins end.

And a way to predict if a unit bought in a shop will suffer this problem or not.

  • Actually I had no issues with 8.0 or any version before that.

I tried what you suggested, and after forcing the device into mass storage mode, it just works again. Without downgrading. Booted several times now. This is really weird.

Also tried the diagnostics menu, like suggested in the other thread. And all tests passed.

  • add it to the pile of weirdness that surrounds these devices in the last week.

The 3 I've had are completely unstable beyond 7.1

  • My unit would also bootloop on both 7.24 beta and 8.0/8.1 - what fixed the issue for me was removing all custom maps I've previously installed (.img files manually transfered to the unit). Since then it behaves as intended, no more restarts/bootloops and whatnot.

  • In my case version 8.1 restart loop is caused by Popularity map . Profile - Navigation - Map-  Popularity map. If function is on then I get restart loop. If new profile is create and that function is enabled then profile can not be created.

  • Hey Yason, Do you have links/names to the maps you were using? I'd love to provide the info to a friend. I don't think they test with 3rd party maps so maybe they're just not seeing this in their world.

  • Awesome, thanks for heads up.
