Route Navigation issue

I created a route in Garmin Connect and uploaded it to my 830 (Ver 8.10)
The route included a section where I turned onto a road, which led out to a loop that then returned on the same road. As soon as I turned, I got an OFF COURSE notification, with a MAKE A U-TURN instruction. I continued to ride to the loop, and the unit just stopped navigating completely. I had to save that portion of the ride when I got back to the end of the road, re-load the original route, and tell it not to navigate to the start of the ride. It did pick up the rest of the route from there, but it messed up the total mileage, average speed, and time.
Is this some new bug? Is there a special way to create an 'out and back' segment in a route without confusing the navigation?
Loop starts after mile 10, heading out to Lake Greenwood.

  • I'm not surprised about this. I've had my 830 skip loops and I've had it try to repeat completed loops. Ver. 8.00 does not have improved navigation algorithms over older firmware releases. I complained to customer support and they sent me a new unit as if that would fix their software issues.

One would think that for a device touted as being able to provide navigation assistance that Garmin would put more resources into fixing these types of issues.

  • The only options in the Routing menu are "Minimize Distance" (it was set to that), "Minimize Time" or "Minimize Ascent". I'm certain it did what it did because, obviously, without that loop, the total distance to the finish would be less. But, it would be less with time as well. I've changed it to "Minimize Ascent" and will see what it does. Meanwhile, there doesn't appear to be any way to turn them all off and just tell the unit to follow the route as is.

  • EDIT: I may have found the answer. In the ride profile / navigation menu, there is an option to turn route recalculation to OFF. Other options are Automatic or Prompted.
