Problems: New Edge 830 Version 8.00 Now Available

Since I installed the new version gps is no longer recognized by my pc, and is constantly rebooting itself.
From what I've seen there are more users of this equipment with the same problem, can anyone help?

Thanks in advance

  • now in the same situation with my replacement 830, started about an hour after I updated to 8.0- anytime I select a different profile I get an instant reboot and lose whatever changes I made.

Waiting on a call back from Garmin to see what they want to do with this one...

  • That was fast, Garmin is sending me another "new" edge 830 (comes in a ESD bag, no way to get one sealed in a box so who knows if it's really new or not). I told them what it was doing, that I had done the reset to no avail and then there was some polite cursing on the other end. Followed by setting up the email to get the next on the way to me. With the trailforks map problems I have (can't get to 2021.10 from 2019.10 but they are finally unlocked...) and now this, it's going home. Relatively painless process compared to some of the dealings I've had with tech support from other companies.

  • Unfortunately, I have the same problem. After changing the software on my Edge 830 to version 8.0 it keeps restarting when changing profiles. Now it cannot be used. It should never have happened. Quick software update and repair is needed.

  • At least here, repair is via a refurb. Although if they;re out of those you can get lucky and get a new unit. Never thought twice about the quality of a factory refurb tbh.

  • my concern is getting someone else's "problem child" that Garmin looked at for a few minutes, called good and sent back out since it powered on and seemed okay.

Like my current unit, that destabilized within an hour of having it. I have no way of knowing if its a refurb but it is no where near as rock solid as my original unit I got shortly after release.  It's only usable as long as I don't try to select a different profile... or try to connect to it wifi as it constantly forgets the network its connected to or try get to the current trailforks map set (vs the one I'm stuck with from 2019).

  • It should be as good (or bad) as any other new unit. I'll assume that they run diagnostics on the units, replace the battery & case etc. I've gone through a few refurbs and although one or two have had long term problems (E820 screen halo), they've behaved like a new unit. Bonus (at least here) is that you refresh the warranty for another 2 yrs on the replacement.

  • "should" is the key word

I don't doubt that there are plenty of good refurbs out there (my 2nd F5X is a refurb and has been trouble free for years, the original had the HRM cracking less than 3 months in) but this 830 is just a mess.   The first hour was great, its been downhill ever since. Today it (once again) failed to find the my wifi, that's been entered countless times and now it can't find my phone...

I'll see what the mail brings as far as the next one (the replacement for the replacement arrives today) and if I continue to swap units with Garmin till I get one that's stable and reliable for more than an hour. Part is hoping that its software and the 8.10 update will fix it but until I see good reports, I'm staying on 7.1

  • Updated to 8.00 my edge 830 and it moved into infinite boot loop. However, after I deleted all maps manually (to connect it to PC i connected cable while holding "lap" button to force storage mode) it boots, but after installing the maps from garmin express or third-party and trying to zoom on map it reboots again. Also made non-volatile memory erase (it deletes all activities and settings too, be careful), nothing changed

  • tried also 8.10 - it works well but also reboots while zooming/rotating the map. Eventually went to 7.10, no more problems
