Feature request: automatically detect bike from speed sensor

I own both a MTB and a road bike and use the same Edge 830 for both, However both bikes have their own Garmin speed sensor.

Isn't it possible to have the device automatically pick the right bike for the current ride based upon which speed sensor is active?

As of now I have to set one of the bikes as default and go in and edit each activity later if I don't ride on my default bike.

  • It is not possible to do what you want.  All the sensors go into a sensor pool and every profile can access this sensor pool.

  • I do not think that TS wants confirmation that it is not possible, as he/she suggests it as a "Feature request" Grinning

Typically speed/cadence/pedal sensors are "hard wired". Things as lighting/radar (I do not have, so don't know) most likely.

    Heartbeat certainly not.

So if you could use e.g. the speed sensor only, to automatically identify the bike (manual override possible if needed), that would be an advantage; would even motivate me to buy a separate speed sensor(s) for my MTB and/or winter road bike.

  • I wasn't speaking about profiles - for now I'll accept that I have to change profile from road -> mtb. But in terms of data tracking it must be possible to asign a speed sensor to a specific bike.

  • It used to work that way back in the days of the Edge 800.  There were bike profiles and sensors were added to the bike profiles so you could assign certain sensors to certain bikes.  Then Garmin changed how it works to a sensor pool that is shared between all profiles.

If you have a different speed sensor on each bike then the Edge unit will just pick up the active sensor on the bike you are using which should be set up for that bike.

  • I also wish the speed sensor option would be feasible because of reasons stated by others, but as a step in the right direction, it seems at the VERY LEAST, the option would be to allow your choice of Road or Mountain or Indoor to automatically select a bike associated with each profile. That would suffice for me because I only use one for each ride type. (Though I realize many people have more than one bike for each type of ride, and anything that could simplify this for them would be helpful! It IS a bit of a chore to have to remember to go into Connect and CHANGE the GEAR choice every time, ESPECIALLY because it isn't always shown on the screen; instead, you have to select GEAR and SEE what was automatically chosen. Having only a single default bike is pretty ludicrous for such otherwise capable hardware and software as the Garmin universe includes.)

  • FYKI there is at least one cycling computer which chooses the bike and their assigned profile (including data screens), it is iBike Newton, which I use as a supplementary to my Edge:

    ”AUTOMATIC PROFILE SELECTION (APS)

New to FW 5.0, your Newton will automatically figure out which bike you're using on
today's ride, and automatically select the correct profile for it!
    Here is how APS works:
    1) Create a profile for each bike
    2) Do a speed/cadence sensor Scan for each profile
    3) Attach the Newton to the bike you want to ride
    4) Wake up the bike's speed/cadence sensor by spinning the wheel/crank
    5) Wake up the Newton
After a few seconds, the Newton will find the ANT+ sensor active on your bike, and
automatically select the correct profile to work with it. The bullseye lights in the main
window of the Newton, signaling that speed/cadence information is being received
