Memory too small

Garmin comes with an update of the European map through GE.

This update could not installed by insufficient memory while only having the Alps Open Cycle Map in the device. (~3 Gb).

NIce!

  • Had no issue here with the update. Have you maybe saved some other files on the storage?

You can look at those if you open the file explorer on the computer while it's attached. Just don't start deleting files if you aren't sure.

  • As I told, the Alps Open Cycle Map was installed; with the new Garmin map much bigger there was no place for that anymore. Decided to keep Alps map and Benelux Opencyclemap and not install Garmin whole Europe map. Both Alps and Benelux have more details and are updated monthly/weekly (Benelux) and I do not nee, to mention few, Norway, Hungary, Portugal....

  • It would probably update OK if you removed the third party maps you have added.  You can always just move the third party maps off the unit temporarily while the Garmin maps update.

  • It is not that the update process requires that much memory while updating, but the updated Garmin Europe map is that much bigger, installed, that the Opencycle maps do not fit back. Anyway: I did not use the Garmin map that much, but Garmin could consider to offer "Europe in pieces" and make the user decide what to install. Imagine that the (cycle) infrastructure in EU is very much denser than in, say, US, so whole Europe could not compare to whole US.

  • I'm curious, where did you find the "Alps Open Cycle Map"? I'm wondering if that would be better than the Garmin maps for me.

  • Hi Martin,

I'm very curious where you see the advantages from openfietsmap over "Routable Cycle Maps for Europe 2021.10".
To some extent I'm okay with the standard garmin maps, mostly biking passes in the alps around here in Tyrol / Austria.

Considering to change the map material, but I'd like to know the advantages / disadvantages and couldn't find anything so far.

    Thanks,

    Max

  • Third party maps have a different colour scheme to the Garmin maps.  You may prefer these to the Garmin colour scheme.  Third party maps are often updated more often than the Garmin maps.  Having more recent map additions/corrections can be useful.

  • Firstly: OpenCycleMap (OFM) is as much third party as the Garmin provided map: they are all based on Openstreetmap (full volunteer work)

For the OFM the cyclepaths are better highlighted, the level of detail is better, cycle routes and MTB routes are clearly indicated, Benelux (Belgium-Netherlands-Luxemburg) is updated weekly and the Alps at a lower frequency, I only check when I go to the Alps, but something as bimonthly. Again all volunteer work.

Further you download only what you need and not the giga-file for all Europe, which makes downloading, transferring and installing easier. I do not need Norway, Hungary and Portugal, to mention some corners, in one map at the same time. It would be an  improvement already when Garmin would supply 'chunks' of Europe as separate downloads, to my opinion.

  • Check the latest beta of the Edge 830 firmware, it allows a lot of color customizations. I expect this to be in the next normal release.
