Firmware update while navigating

Hallo. I was doing day three of the Sani2C mountain bike challenge 86km in the cane fields and valleys. There was not any arrowing done and had to rely only on my Garmin Edge 830. Halfway through my race the unit started doing firmware updates and lost all riding data as well as navigation. What do i need to to to avoid this from ever hapening again. must ony update when connected to Garmin Connect?

  • Disable auto update. But I never heard of a Garmin device doing it while in activity.
was a Blue line around the screen when you did it? This would mean you opened the activity but did forget to push start button.

  • Don't have the device connected to a phone or Wi-Fi while riding.  Turn off any auto updates.  Manually check for updates before rides/events.

  • Thanks. Will do this

  • Me too,

I don't know where can I turn off the auto updates

  • This is still a bug that Garmin never fixed. It happened to me 2 years ago in 2021 in the middle of my ride and all GPS function stopped. I updated everything on the Edge 830 after I got home. I update the device a couple more times and it seemed to be stable. So, I stopped plugging in the device to the Connect software on my computer for this next 2 years to prevent any more firmware update. Then, last night (July 18, 2023), the stupid firmware update kicked in out of nowhere about 10-15 minutes into my ride up a mountain. Then, after it successfully updated, the messages keep popping up every 10-15 minutes - really annoying. I look at  the elevation gain and loss - it's stuck at 81m and 10m respectively. The only thing recording are from the speed sensor - distance and speed. I look at the history of the ride and you can see that the ride only recorded up to where the GPS firmware updated started. So frustrating! You'd think that Garmin had fixed this years ago. Like who wants a frickin software and firmware update in the middle of a ride FFS!
