Trailforks 2021.01 missing data

I've opened a ticket on this but if anyone else is seeing it, more reports might help in tracking down the root cause.

I decided to post here as well in case anyone else is running into this for their area or might have an idea if it is something I'd done wrong.   The missing trails do appear to be tagged in the same manner as those that were added.

Garmin Edge Trailforks map update 2021.01 did not copy all of the maps added last year. (I see a small portion)
Seen at lat/lon 38.986825 -86.270510

I had updated 18 maps to exist for Trailforks within this Hoosier National Forest (added Fall 2020).
I did mark them all as Mountain Bike trails.  A few existed in TF as hiking trails and I updated them to MTB trails (because they are in fact MTB allowed trails).
They all exist in Trailforks. (top picture)

Only a few of them were copied over to the Garmin Trailforks basemaps. (Lower left picture)
If I use a paid trailforks PRO account to copy their basemaps I can overlay it on the garmin (lower right picture).
This shows (yellow trails) that are missing from the built in Garmin basemaps.
Screenshots:

  • Great place to ride even if you don't know where you are going.

  • Hi.

Same experience as you have. Wait for the fall update.

I have done a lot of updates on OpenStreetmap, and it taks more than a year. And on the second update, before you can see the changes.

  • It is like all map upgrades. These maps needs to be prepared. So they fix the origin for a date and prepare it.
It is likely always minimum half a year older then the actual data, but definitely newer then what you have.

I spoke with trailforks and the export they did should have included these trails.  It already has like 5 of the 18 trails that I created all in the same day. (they all would have been in the same export to Garmin)  They didn't see a reason why some would be showing and others wouldn't.

Also - I found that PREVIOUSLY EXISTING trails from 2019.2 are now missing in 2020.10    There are literally (sections) of trails that disappeared.  They still exist within the Trailforks database (they were never removed).

You can see what I'm talking about in Brown County State Park (Nashville, Indiana).

First screenshot I circled the broken ends.  Second Screenshot zoomed in you can see OpenStreetMap filling in the blanks where Trailforks maps are missing sections.    (These were not broken before the update and are not broken within the main trailforks database).

Trailforks has img map downloads for paid subscribers - I put one of those on my Garmin and the sections are not broken.  However the colors are all messed up on those so - still need Garmin to fix their maps.   :(

On second glance, this is the Garmin device not rendering PARTS of trails.  For example, this trail is missing the top on the Garmin, but the trail itself is on the device.  It could be a firmware issue not rendering sections of trails.
  • My experience with my local area is that new trails usually take 1 to 2 update cycles on the Garmin CIQ map sets to appear. The exact timing seems to be highly dependent on how close to the next update it was added in. For example- a couple of trails I added in April/May of last year, didn't make the 2020.2 update but they did make the 2021.1 map set. Whereas a trail I added in August of 2020, showed up on the 2021.10 update .

I don't know the cutoff for new trails but it looks to be at least 3 months for the next update. So in theory, the missing trails should appear on the 2021.20 map set, whenever that appears.

At this point, all trails in central Indiana are just missing random chunks.  This includes pre-existing trails that were fine in 2019 - 2020.

The 2020.10 Trailforks maps are most definitely corrupt, at least for the state of Indiana.

I have confirmed this with other users in Indiana, and the problem shows in Basecamp as well.

Is nobody seeing this in other states?

  • Did you check how they look in trailforks web? This map is community build. Garmin does not rework them in any way.

Yep - they look fine in trailforks web.  They also look fine in the Trailforks direct (paid) garmin .img map downloads.  They never appeared to be missing chunks on anything other than the Garmin supplied trailforks map downloads.  I did open a ticket a month or so ago with Garmin but never heard back on it.

The thing is everything looked fine on the Garmin supplied Trailforks 2020 maps.  Somewhere either during the data dump from Trailforks to Garmin, or the way Garmin compiled the maps with 2021.10, it just cut random stuff out.  Even some of the trails are still there but are just missing gaps here and there....really strange.   The screenshot above, the missing chunks are parts of trails that are still there with gaps. For example Aynes loops and Green Valley are still there, but with gaps (the gaps were never there in the actual Trailforks data from their side).  And the gaps weren't there on the Garmin 2020 Trailforks maps
