i have edge 830 and when indoors connected to wahoo kickr v5 but i cant follow a garmin connect training program as resistance is wrong?

I have tried different ways to connect, i have reset the edge, i have paired and unpaired.  it seems to function correctly with manual adjustment. but if you are doing short sprints etc in high zones stopping to adjust resistance and then readjusting is just not practical.?

  • Hi,

How did you pair your Kicker? Normal via sensors or as indoor trainer?

  • As mentioned, you need to pair it as trainer, not as "dumb" sensor. Once done resistance will be controlled by training program or manually.

I'm using it this way with a Kickr Core, works like a charm.

  • The answer you gave is wrong in my case. I found the issue was created at the point on the garmin connect website where you select a training program and input settings before sending it to the edge.  You have to input your sensors and the choices are Power meter-Hrm-Indoor trainer. i had been selecting indoor trainer and hrm and that causes the edge to train with hrm. Confusing way it works. For it to work correctly only Power meter should be selected.

I'm not sure if just selecting indoor trainer works since ive not tried it.

  • I don't think that it will work out like this.
When you create a workout you only define your targets, e.g. a specific time in a specific HR range or at a certain power.
But like e.g. running workout you have to match the target(s) yourself. In a running workout that would mean you have to run faster or slower sometimes. You are the "indoor trainer" in this example.
For a bike workout and your Edge to control your trainer (Kickr) it needs to be connected as trainer. Like this your head unit (Edge) will control the Kickr and adjust resistance according to your target. If not connected as trainer your Edge just reads the power data and you have to control it by e.g. shifting.
There a several "tutorials" to be found in web.

  • The training program has been made by garmin so i had no power or hr settings to add so i dont think you can advise someone while you dont seem to know how it is set up.

i have already completed the first training session last night in power z2, z3 and z4.  I would guess the kickr only has a power meter so there cant be any difference? It doesn't have a cadence or speed sensor.

But i will try adding it as a indoor trainer instead just to compare.

  • Garmin's power zones in trainings are derived from what you set as FTP. You can check zones and power ranges on your device and Garmin Connect (web/app). As mentioned, if you follow a workout and e.g. Z2 is defined it just gives you a target power and you need to nail it. Connect your Kickr as trainer and it will set resistance accourding to what is defined in workout. That's the idea behind a smart trainer. If you want/need to control resistance yourself you could also use a dumb turbo trainer.
