Edge 830 Not detecting detecting my speed and cadens sensors anymore

Hey guys,

A few months ago I switched from my very old Sigma computer to the Garmin Edge 830. Since I had ANT+ Speed and cadence sensors with my Sigma I did not buy new sensors and just paired my edge with my old sensors. I had no problem doing this.

However, On my bike ride yesterday my 830 wouldnt connect to my sensors anymore. I stopped to delete my sensors and try to re-add them. It wouldn't find them. Funny enough, while on the side of the road fiddling with my 830, it suddenly picked up the sensors from an oncomming cyclist. Therefore detection itself seems to work, it's just not detecting mine.

This was my first ride after I updated the device to 7.10. Also it was the first ride that I actually paired my phone with my Garmin over Bluetooth.

Things I tried:

 - Resetting the device to it's original settings
- changing the batteries in my sensors
- Turning off bluetooth on my phone
- Turning off the phone pairing on my device

Nothing worked so far. It's simply not detecting my sensors, while it had no problem detecting them before. Are there any other things I can try?

Thanks!

  • Have you tried changing out any batteries or resetting these sensors? If your Edge detected sensors from another bike, then there is nothing happening to the ANT+ channels being received by the Edge.

I would start troubleshooting with the sensors first. What brand and model are these?

  • Hi Blake,

Thank you for your answer. I have tried changing the batteries in both my sensors. It didn't solve anything. However, I have tried to see if my old device (Sigma Rox 10.0) could find the sensors. Since the sensors came with this computer it should find them IF there is no problem with them. However, it couldn't detect them either.

It indeed seems to be a problem with the sensors. I am highly surprised tho, since the problem occured in both at exactly the same time.

I will see if Sigma has any solution/answer for this. In the meanwhile, could we think of any other things I could try before I need to buy new sensors?

  • Have you tried removing the batteries and leaving them out for 30 minutes? This should reset the sensors and possibly get them working again. I've seen this procedure work several times.

  • Thank you for your answer,

I wasn't aware of this method. I tried it and it worked for the speed sensor at least, so I am happy with that. It didn't work for the cadence sensor, but that sensor has given me problems before with my old Sigma computer aswell. I guess that one might be ready for replacement. You did however save me some bucks from not having to replace the speed sensor (yet). Thanks again!

For now I am just wondering what it could have been that made me have to reset my sensors like this, so I can avoid it in the future. I guess we will never know tho :)

  • I had the same problem, speed sensor 2 paired with edge 830, but no data was transmitted to the device. Speed data shown on the screen was GPS data.

I replaced the battery since the original one showed 2,9V on the multimeter. That didn't helped.

Al the pairing and setting were done in my "bike room" where I have numerous bikes and also Tacx flux S connected to power. At some point I was fidling with the battery of the sensor in my office and I suddenlly got speed readings. Happy as a radio, I mounted the sensor and again no readings. Then I thought maybe it has something to do with Tacx Flux beeing connected but in sleep mode.... It was a long shot, but I tried also that. Unplugged the Tacx and boom, speed sensor works. I don't know it Tacx was the reason, but it solved my problem.
