training load/effect / 830 / forerunner / tacx

Hey there,

My apologies straight off - I've seen some threads a while back that touch on this, can't spot them now, and wanted to get my head around it.

I love the garmin connect system and the data it gives me. Even if some bits are questionable I like that it probably tracks my improvement (or otherwise) quite well.

I use a forerunner 945 and an edge 830 on a tacx turbo trainer (or outdoors on my Giant Defy). I use Zwift for entertainment. I don't have a power meter on the bike.

1) Garmin connect has a dropdown for each device in the "Load Focus" section - the anerobic, high aerobic, and low aerobic do not change as you toggle between devices but the overall message above it does. When the bike is selected it says Anaerobic shortage, when the watch is selected it says low aerobic shortage - yet the 3 levels stay the same.

Can I take it then that the message is per device, but the levels in the graphs are across both devices and so give me an overall picture? For example, I've had a message before that says "go for a walk or an easy bike ride" - I assume if so that it would address the deficit across both devices?

2) I love using Zwift and the Zwift recording if sent to GC or to Strava will show the elevation of the ride, and therefore I assume the appropriate calories burnt (as an example, though I realise this is only a ballpark and not that accurate). However, recording with the 830, using the Tacx as the trainer unit, doesn't result in any elevation on my GC ride, only HR. speed, cadence. Can GC really then be showing appropriate values for that ride whilst treating it like a flat ride when actually it may have been really hilly?

3) If I use my head unit and ride a past ride from it, where it knows the elevation etc, the trainer then mimicks the inclines - and I think (I forgot to check) that GC would show the inclines and would be giving a more accurate reading of how the ride was?

3) I'm sure I've seen someone say don't bother trying to resolve any differences in speed between Zwift and your garmin head unit - but is there a way to get a similar reading from the two? I'd have to check but one reason mine may differ could be that I dialled down the trainer difficulty level in Zwift a bit.

It seems a real shame that there can't be a more seamless system when using Zwift.

Thank you for any replies :-)

  • I would be glad to try and addrerss some of your concerns

    1) Would I have your permission to access your account on our end? This would let me look at your device settings like HR zones, as well as your physio trueup settings. The latter would be very important to make sure your training metrics have parity across your devices.

    2) When using a Tacx trainer with your 830, it will use your Power data and your Heart Rate information along with your User Profile data to determine your calories burned. The lack of elevation won't impact it like one might think as added resistance would result in a higher wattage, which will be accounted for when using the power data from your trainer.

    3) I'm not positive what you're asking here. Are you asking if the 830 will show the map/elevation data from a previous ride if you use it as a course on your trainer?

    4) We cannot control the speed values displayed or estimated by Zwift, but would encourage you to check for any wheel size settings available in the 830 to make sure you're seeing the most accurate results.

  • Hi thanks for the reply.
    1) yea no problem - it’s all under the email address that this account is.

    2) ok yes that makes sense.

    3) yes that’s it - I THINK when I used a last activity in the 830 my uploaded ride at the end shows elevation.

    4) I’ll check this. In fact I have a different bike entirely on my turbo now so I’ll check this everywhere. Thanks for the prompt.
