Edge 830 on a motorbike??

This may seem a stupid question but.... I wonder if anyone has tried using their Edge 830 as navigation device on a motorbike? Did it work? Any tricks / tips on the best profile settings?! Any way of stopping this "Motorbike" data affecting your stats (or ensuring it doesn't get sync'ed with Strava)?

Sorry for all the questions - really like my Edge on my MTB and Road bike so (bored in lockdown) was thinking out loud about how it may make a good occasional-use unit on a motorbike.

Thx

  • I haven't recently used an Edge on a motorcycle but ~10 years ago or so I used my Edge 705 on my motorcycle.  It worked exactly the same as it did on the bicycle.  I haven't tried any of the newer units since, but I suspect it'd be the same.  Of course there's no motorbike category in Garmin Connect (AFAIK) and if you plan on recording and saving rides, you probably don't want them aggregated with your cycling running and other fitness activities, so you'll need to figure out some workaround.  Garmin does make a moto specific GPS unit.

  •  We would recommend checking out our Zumo device here. I understand that buying an additional device is not always an option for everyone, but this will result in a better experience that using a cycling device on your motorcycle.

You will be able to navigate a course in a similar to how you would navigate on a bike, but the higher speeds may deliver unwanted results.

  • Thank you.... Understand the zumo are designed for the job but will probably give it a go anyway

  • YES Its possible !!!

Step 1 ... make a new profile for motorbiking and set te routing to motorbike or car

step 2 ... instal the free OpenStreetMap routable map (google it)

    step 3 ... enjoy your riding :)

  • Great thought - thank you!!!

  • Yes but as silly as it is there is a rapidly growing sport called Hard enduro. Which heavily relies on GPS navigation. Those riders have to use smaller handheld garmin devices which aren't really suited for riding either. It could be something Garmin should look into as a rugged edge 830/530 designed for dirt bike use would sell very well!
