how to use 830 just as a display, during indoor training?

Hi all,

I am searching for the best way on how to use my new 830 for my indoor workouts.

I want the 830 to display the main metrics, while the smart trainer itself is controlled by the Tacx app or e.g. ZWIFT/Kinomap.
I don't want to use the 830 to take control of the smart trainer!

Currently -while training- I keep seeing this blue "pause/play"-like icon flashing during my workouts, while the desired metrics are shown (pls ignore gradient in the shown example). I am peddling like crazy, but my interpretation is that the Edge is waiting for the ride to start Slight smile.

Bottom line is that I am using my garmin 945 as the recorder of all my activities.

The smart trainer (Flux 2) is only paired as power/cadans/speed sensor to both the 945 and the 830. (This as I have experienced that my 945 will override the control by the Tacx app or e.g. ZWIFT, when paired as indoortrainer - even in free ride mode).

Yes, I have seen the video of GPSLama, but he is using the Edge as control unit, which I obviously don't want when I am using an app to control the resistance of the indoor trainer.

Curious about your suggestions!

Many thanks in advance.

PS: All connections via ANT+

PS2: Yes, I know that I can use the 830 as slave display for the 945, but that's not what I am looking for.

note: I hope in near future the "Tacx app workout-editor" will converge with the "Garmin Connect workout-editor", or that at least that your own Tacx workouts can be loaded into the Edge device as that would make the edge a competent control unit for indoor trainers.

  • So what I do is I pair everything to Zwift via BLE (HR,Kickr,Cadence).  Zwift will be my primary fit file when all is done.  Next I pair the same sensors to my 830 on Ant+ (I used to do this to my F5+, but I like seeing more data on my head unit).  Note I do not add the trainer as a trainer.  I add it as a power sensor.  When I start the Zwift ride, I also hit the start button on my 830.  I display time, lap power, HR, cadence, average power and then 3s, 10s, 30s power.  When I finish the ride I exit Zwift.  I stop the 830 and save this file as well.  I then let the 830 file upload to GC, but as soon as it does I delete it off the 830 so the Zwift file will be transferred to the 830.  Then I take some screen prints of the 830 file in GC and delete it there as well.  This leaves the Zwift file and I upload the scree prints here.

The reason I save and then delete the 830 file is to get training stats, Vo2max and also any lap stats I may collect.

So in your case, just press start on the 830 but don’t save the activity when you are done.  You are already doing that on the 945.

  •  could it be that simple... just press the play button! Joy

Of course I tried tapping the touch screen, but to no avail.

I have my 830 wrapped in a protective case, so I overlooked the actual physical play button...

    O my...Smirk

    MANY THANKS!

( I too make screenshots and delete double registrations in GC; whereas I keep the 945 registrations and add the screenshots of the deleted Tacxapp/Zwift workouts, and sometimes add climb info)

  • Note I do not add the trainer as a trainer

BTW:  I think this part is overlooked by many people and is not enough explained by Garmin. Adding a smart trainer as "trainer sensor" in your garmin device (e.g. edge/forerunner) will trouble using other apps to control the resistance of your trainer.
