Edge 830 data doesn't show up correctly in iOS Fitness & Health apps

Hi, I'm frustrated that data from the Garmin Edge 830 and the Garmin heart rate monitor syncs with my iOS Fitness and Health apps but not properly. Is there a way to fix this?

iOS Fitness App:

  • No data populates in the "Activity" section, which is the most important part of the app (even when the same data populates in other sections and the Health app).
  • Some data syncs correctly to the "Workouts" section,
    • but it only includes: Total Time, Distance, Active Calories, Total Calories, and Average speed
    • and does not include: Elevation Gain, Elevation, Average Heart Rate, Heart Rate, Map and Weather

iOS Health App:

  • No data populates the "Activity" section, which is the most important part of the app (even when the same data populates in other sections and the Health app).
  • Data that shows up: Active Energy, cycling distance
  • Data that doesn't show up: Heart rate

All of my software is up to date. I've done a ton of troubleshooting. I even tried using Strava to sync the same data. But from what I've found looking at forums, it seems like this is another example of the Garmin being a terrible product.

Since I got this device in May, I've been astonished at how bad this product's user experience has been. Bad navigation has left me unsure where to go and taken me miles out of the way. Its default settings are annoying and difficult to change. And there are thousands of arcane settings buried in the device itself and across too many other apps —including the Garmin Connect iOS app, the Garmin Connect website, the Garmin Express macOS app – there are so many options but this basic bike computer always fails to get the basics right.

Overall, I've spent a ridiculous amount of time on the road and lost, on the road and fumbling to get the device to do what I want it to do, and searching forums just to get things to work the way it should from the moment you open the box. And with this unnecessary complexity, I wonder if I can get the data I want where I want it. If so, please let me know!

  • Wow, I didn't even realize my Edge 830 and HR monitor was supposed to sync with Apple health/fitness apps. I always just use the Cycle workout app on my Apple watch to feed everything to the Fitness and Health app. I only use Garmin for navigation and detail ride performance.

I'm not sure if it's "supposed to," I just expect that it would.

  • To be clear: It is not the Edge wich delivers into Apple health, it is Garmin Connect (if you enable it, its off by apples default).  It will transfer activities from every device wich syncs into Garmin Connect. If I remember right, even if you synced from Zwift into Garmin into health.

  • I am on Android as opposed to IOS however I think you will find some of the issues the same.  Garmin in most cases will only use data from their watches, not the 830 for fitness apps.  This is certainly true of HR data.
