You can't make everybody happy!

People complained about not showing the cross street.

Some people would be confused by the toggle (why is it doing one thing rather than the other?).

The historical behaviour (starting with the 800, at least) was to show the cross street.

Maybe, what it should do is show the current street until you get close to a cross street. But that might be confusing.

I think showing the cross street is more useful than showing the same thing for, possibly, miles and miles. The cross street can be useful for using cuesheets (the street you are on would be close to useless for that).

Don't expect Garmin to change it.

Agree with steveh5863... discovered this today while riding.  Wondered perhaps if I had somehow changed a setting.  Annoying. I’d rather have the map identify my current road.  I can see the cross streets on the map!

I like the idea of showing the cross street when you get close.  

I'm curious as to when this change back to the original display take place? I just noticed it a few days ago. Was it changed in the last firmware update?  I prefer it showing the cross streets. I seldom don't know what street I'm riding on.

Cuesheets are still used. They are required for randonee events. And the cross street is useful when using cuesheets.

Given that the original/historic behaviour was to show the cross street, Garmin fixed a bug.

I'm reasonably sure that the 1030 originally had the cross street and, now, it's back to the standard of showing cross streets.

Anybody use the current street for something beyond "nice to know"?

I can see uses for both.  When turning onto an unmarked street it is nice to verify that you are on the right road.  Like you say, the text on the map itself can be very hard to read.  But the name of the next crossroad is nice too, although I wish it would also tell you the distance as it does when you are running a course.  (Knowing that "Smith Road" is coming up is of limited use when you can't see it on the map and don't know how far it is.)   I guess in a perfect world it would be nice to have both....perhaps the ability to toggle back and forth or showing the crossroad and distance when you get close would be the ideal.  But it isn't a perfect world.

You first need to know it's the cross street to turn on to it. You already know it's the right road. Knowing after the fact might be nice but it isn't necessary.

The value of it is that you don't need to see it on the map at all. It's literally the next cross street (which might only be on the left!). Since it's the next cross street, you don't really need to know how far it is either. It's not necessary if it's close (but might be nice to have if it's farther).

One problem with showing the distance is that it would make it look too much like the normal navigation (it might make it less clear what the unit was doing).

Having a toggle might make it less clear about what state the device was in. If it's going to do one thing, showing the cross street is more useful.
