I don't have an optical HR sensor. Why Garmin could track my Respiration Rate?

Taken from Help in Garmin Connect:

Respiration

Respiration rate is a measure of how many breaths per minute (brpm) you take throughout the day. A breath includes both the inhalation and exhalation. Your compatible Garmin device tracks respiration using optical heart rate technology.

I'm using Wahoo Tickr with my 830. Why do I see Respiration Rate data in my Activity?

edit: ok, I found the FAQ related to this question.

What Is the Respiration Rate Feature on My Garmin Device?

  • Because the ANT+ HR profile includes the Heart Rate Variability (HRV) needed to determine respiration rate from the paired HRM.  It does not have to be an optical HR sensor.  The watches can determine respiration rate from a paired sensor or the OHR sensor in the watch.
