Please let me do a power based workout in slope/resistance mode.

I never ever ever want to use ERG mode. Never have and never will. Just no, thank you.

I do however want to have power goals on my workout intervals. That's the main parameter I'm using.

These two things are still impossible to combine with Garmin afaik. I'ts a bit ridiculous.

That new(?) smart trainer control widget is really cool, and I was happy to see that I could change mode when I started my workout. But of course it resets back to power for every interval...

I always end up removing smart trainer control from my edge. I can't be alone?

  • Are you doing a workout or following a course?  Following a course, the Edge will send the slope to a smart trainer to emulate the climbs in a course, and the trainer will adjust resistance to emulate that slope.   Doing a workout,  the defining parameter is power and the Edge sends power to a smart trainer and the trainer adjusts to obtain that power irrespective of wheel speed, AKA ERG mode.  In a workout, there is no defined slope (or resistance), only defined power.

One solution I can think of is to only connect the trainer to the Edge as a power meter, and then use cadence and shifting as you would on a dumb trainer to achieve the power you want.  The problem I see with this is setting the resistance to something other than near zero on the smart trainer.   Depending on your trainer, it might default to a dumb trainer curve in the absence of an external slope or power command, or you might be able to set the resistance with a separate app.

  • I'm doing some on Zwift and some just with the Edge. In Zwift I can choose between ERG and flat road, which is totally fine. When doing them with the Edge I sometimes use the Tacx app to adjust the slope to really optimize cadence/power.

When I'm doing power based workouts on the road there is nothing "setting the power" for me. It's amazing Garmin won't allow this when doing indoor, power based workouts, with smart trainer control. It still has to be disabled. It's almost 2021 for gods sake! Haha!

  • I've been using Garmin Edge units for 10+ years and they've continually amazed.
