U-turns and freezing screen

I am navigating a course and at several points It tells me to U-turn ! There is no U-turn though! Even the last point, end of course, has to be U-turned to.

When reaching the point where it tells me to u-turn, the map on screen freezes and my location is not updated, even despite me going the other direction for minutes. Then I halted, tapped the screen and there it came alive and put me on track.

This definitely must be a HUGE bug and needs to be sorted ASAP.

As my device is only 1 week old  and I am considering returning it for obvious reasons.

  • It's almost certainly a problem with the course you're navigating.  Where did you get it or create it?

Such a huge bug would have been experienced by many and reported here in this forum.  So, before returning it, I suggest trying it on some different courses.  I've used many sources for courses, but by far, the one I use the most is RideWithGPS, where I almost always lay out my own courses.  I ride both road and mtb, though the majority of my riding the past 5 years or so has been mtbing

If you created it, one problem that can happen as you're clicking along in an app is to put a course point on the wrong side of the road or on an adjacent path, or on a crossing road at an intersection.  Any of these can result in loops and turns in the course you don't see in the app unless you zoom in quite far. Some apps have instructions that describe how to prevent doing this.

  • The u-turns seems to have disappeared. Could indeed have been wacky track. We'll see.

Bad weather?  makes the screen unresponsive (freezes) to keep the direction facing up when going other direction, but my position continues update normal.

To make it clear: I did not ment touching is unresponsive!

When turning the screen should keep facing up in direction and rotate. By now i've seen to many times it gets stuck and is unresponsive. Bad weather all the times, and never seen this on sunny days.

  • Bad weather?  makes the screen unresponsive

This is as old as capacitive touch screens are: water drops get registered as touches. Its because we are literally walking water baloons.

If you are riding in rainy/misty/foggy weather, use the on/off button to lock the screen (short press). you can still swipe left and right to change pages and you can still use lap and start button when the screen is locked.

  • you misunderstood, please reread

  • I keep my screen set to North up, which doesn't rotates, so I have no experience with the screen not rotating when it's supposed to.  The 830 has a compass, so you might try doing a calibration of the compass and ensure it's not close to anything magnetic.

Most all earlier Edge units didn't have a compass and used direction of travel rather than heading to orient the screen.  I believe the 830 uses direction of travel to adjust and calibrate the internal compass over time.

  • The screen is not rotating per direction and also not follwoing the cursor which as a result will move out of the screen when continuing the ride.

  • Odd.  Something might have gotten corrupted.  The next thing I would try is performing a factory reset.

  • it is not doing this all the time, just random.

I tried to calibrate the compass but after 3 minutes turning the device is not responding whatsoever.

  • after removing two IQ apps the Edge 830  calibrates within the minute consistantly!

wacky IQ in relation to compass has been mentioned before!!  I am finding that Connect IQ apps are having trouble with the compass direction and heading https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-830/168657/compass-calibration-and-functionality

next days will clarify if removing IQ apps helped in solving this freezing issue.

  • the freezing has been eliminated/workaround. switching pause function from auto/when stopped to off. I assume this auto stop function will work better with speedometer attached.
