Edge 830 Backlight

Hello Garmin, can the Edge 830 have in the System/Backlight an option to allow the screen to stay ON based on the light sensor?

Current config only supports always on or time-out from 15s to 2 min. Would be nice to have an option following the sensor to make sure when night falls the device could switch the backlight to on automatically instead of we manually have to change the settings from time-out to always on....

Thanks

Fernando

  • Sure, you did. In 530 forum, which thread/post I found just after posting here in the 830 forum.

We agree, I just referred to this post of mine in 530 forum to show how many steps one needs to get to the relevant menu item(s). If he chooses that way.

And it was good that you repeated your finding/solution here, which says there is no need to save battery during daytime with the switch-on of auto-backlight.

On the other hand if somebody really does not want a continuous (stays on) backlight during the daytime, as these fellow users here, for him it is good to know that it is faster to switch off auto backlight in the menu of Status page, then to switch on the stays on option in the (normal) Menu

  • At night, when the backlight is OFF, there is no level of brightness that works for me. Even at 100%, it's unreadable in the dark. But with the backlight always on, the screen is readable at 10 or 20% brightness.

I've been coding for 30 years, there is NO WAY this isn't as simple as a single bit flag and a bitmask constant to check against. Come on, Garmin, give me ONE LITTLE BIT.

  • Every night I'm reminded how long Garmin has ignored this simple request to turn the backlight on automatically at night.

Assuming the taps work when wearing gloves, that is.....

    Tap screen

    Tap home

    Tap hamburger

    Don't crash

    Tap down arrow

    Tap down arrow

    Don't crash

    Tap system

    Tap display

    Tap backlight timeout

    Tap stays on

    Don't crash

Tap away the warning (wtf garmin, I'm not a child)

    Tap back

    Tap back

    Tap x

    Tap profile

    Don't crash

  • Not a complete solution for you but your steps can be simplified if you swipe down on the screen then press & hold the (tiny) backlight 'AUTO' icon, which takes you directly to the backlight settings

  • I'm aware of that, but tapping that and holding it is even harder than the menu navigation. Most of the time I end up tapping something else, tapping and holding nothing at all, adjusting the screen brightness, etc. After a couple of failed attempts I give up.

The frustrating part about it is that when you make the initial "touch", you have no idea if you're actually touching the right part of the screen. So now you have to wait a few seconds - because you don't really know how long you have to hold it - and then discover "oh wrong spot". It's even more difficult with full finger gloves on, which also happens to coincide with the darker parts of the year. Tapping through the menus, at least I can "stop" partway through if I need to put my hand back on the bars.

My Edge 810 used to be much more convenient. Pressing power button one, instead of locking the screen, brought up a menu that let you adjust the display, lock the screen, or take a screenshot. That was such a good little interface, I don't know why they removed it. The only time I ever need to lock the screen and can't tap it is in the pouring rain when the screen basically stops working.  But guess what? The screen lock doesn't actually lock it, so the rain still makes it swipe around.

We have the "single tap" screen overlay with almost nothing on it. You could place a couple quick settings at the top and still leave the center mostly transparent. I'm really not a fan of the "pull down" menu, it's too cell-phone like and this isn't a cell phone.
