Can I race against my previous lap?

Sometimes, I ride a short lap several times to create a longer ride. My 830 tracks each lap's statistics; avg speed, time, etc. Can I use the Race feature to race against the previous lap or laps?

Thanks!

Tom

  • theoretically yes, practically not

I think that it should be done via strava segment, but the functionality does not work,

in strava segment page should be available last effort, but I don't remember to find it somewhere

    1. Rivals (Athletes you're following that are above and below you are above and below you on the leaderboard)
    2. PR
    3. Last (your most recent effort on the segment)
    4. Recent best (the best of your five most recent efforts on the leaderboard)
    5. KOM/QOM

Thanks for the pointer! I found the settings for reprioritizing segment goals and used PR as the highest priority; Training > Segments > Default Leader Priority

I then created a private Garmin segment for the 6.5 mile loop I ride and made it a favorite. I synced my Edge 830 using Garmin Express, and the segment shows up on my Edge.

I hope to ride the segment/loop later today to see if I can race against my PR with each lap. I'll let you know how it goes!

    Thanks again,

    Tom

  • against the pr is ok, but as you , I wanted to have agains my last lap, no matter if is much slower than Pr Slight smile

True! I changed the priority to Last. Maybe that will work! Stay tuned!

Well, I rode the segment. Garmin recognized the segment; good start! The Segment Data Screen said "Personal Best" at the top; not what I asked for. I was expecting my Last ride's time.

I finished Lap 1, beating my Personal Best. Cool! Then started Lap 2. Still, the Segment Data Screen showed "Personal Best". I was expecting I'd be riding against the PB time I just rode on Lap 1. Nope. I was still riding against my previous PB.

I tried switching the Goal at the top of the screen during each lap, but it never showed "Last" as an option. In fact, it didn't show most of the options I see in the Default Leader Priority list.

    Any further thoughts?

  • What you are doing is not working with Strava:
You first have to upload the activity to Strava so that its servers know your new PR. Then, you have to sync the edge again to let the edge know your new pr on Stravas servers.

To race against the previous lap, you can build a data site on the edge with average speed for the actual lap and average speed of the last lap. Look through the data fields, there are a few wich average the last lap.
Im not sure if Garmin devices are capable of doing a live lap by lap in one activity. But you can always race an older activity if you select it as a training.
