Night mode does not work on map page

Hi,

I'm looking for help to resolve an issue I have with night mode. I'm also interested to know if others are experiencing the same issue, or if it is somehow specific to me (which would be odd as I have confirmed it on two separate devices).

The problem:

Quite simply, the map screen on my Edge device does not respond to the NIGHT MODE display setting, i.e. it always remains in DAY MODE.

Other info:

  • I'm currently experiencing this on my Edge 830 with map version 2020.10 and firmware version 6.20.
  • I had the same issue on my previous Edge 820, which was replaced by the Edge 830 in August.
  • The issue started on the Edge 820 sometime earlier this year. I'm inclined to think it's linked to the latest map update. It's affected my Edge 830 since I received it.
  • I've had Edge devices since 2013 and the map has always supported night mode. It's definitely a bug.
  • Enabling the 'Use MTB Map Theme' option under the 'MTB/CX' menu in Profile setup does allow the map to enter night mode BUT this displays a map that highlights trails over roads, which isn't much use to me when I'm road riding.

I'm guessing that this issue affects most units, but because it was introduced at the beginning of the summer, there's not many of us making use of night mode. If that's true then we might expect to see more complaints as winter draws in.

I've raised a case with Garmin Support, who I've generally found to be pretty good, but this time are being anything but. I am repeatedly asked to confirm I'm running the latest version of the mobile app (which clearly has nothing to do with this), and the penny dropped today that they hadn't even understood what I meant by night/dark mode. Urgh.

Any help from the community much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Updates:

  • I'm using EU maps, not NA.
  • The map will enter dark mode when zoomed right out, although at that zoom level it's completely useless for navigation.
